Chiefs get their first win over Warriors
By Ginna Young
Cornell looked for the first win of the season for the girls basketball program, and that’s what they got, splitting the conference games over the week.
Dec. 19 vs. Winter conference (W 69-59)
Winter came to call, where the Chiefs dominated over them in the first half. Taking a 10-point lead into the break, Cornell was on a high.
“We played whole, as a team, for the game against Winter,” said coach Stacy Schroeder. “Our pressure on defense created a lot of steals/turnovers, which we were able to convert to points and that is something we’ve been working on.”
The second half was a different matter, as Winter made sure the score was more even – so even, in fact, that both teams put up the same amount of points. But, the Chiefs had the 10-point lead to fall back on from the first half and claimed their victory of the year, 69-59.
“Our offense came together, they played well and we were able to put points on the board,” said Schroeder.
Junior Bralee Schroeder led for the Chiefs, with 17 points, 6 steals, 7 assists and 9 rebounds. Junior Alyssa Bowe also had 17 points, along with 6 rebounds, while senior Lauren Samardzich followed that with 14 points, 5 blocks, 3 steals and 3 rebounds.
Freshman Haylee Ellis came next, with 11 points, 15 rebounds and 3 blocks, with senior Grace Harycki adding 7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Freshman Kyleigh Mercer chipped in with 2 points, and senior Teryn Close rounded out the scoring with 1 point and 4 rebounds.
Dec. 21 vs. Prairie Farm conference (L 68-22)
To finish the week, Cornell headed to Prairie Farm, but ultimately, the victory would go to the home team, 68-22.
It just wasn’t a good game for us,” said S. Schroeder. “We’ve been dealing with a lot of illness this week, which showed on the court on Thursday.”
B. Schroeder had 9 points in the match-up, while Samardzich had 5 points. Bowe added 3 points to the mix, with Harycki and Ellis each contributing 2, and freshman Kylee Hetherington shot a free throw for 1 point.
With the win earlier in the week, Cornell’s record is 1-6 overall and 1-3 in league action.
