Cornell watches conference matches go the opposition
By Ginna Young
It was a bit of a rocky patch for the Cornell girls basketball program, as their two league opponents came up with the pair of victories.
Dec. 12 vs. New Auburn conference (L 64-30)
The first game of the week started against New Auburn, with Cornell hosting the Trojans.
We played a strong first half against New Auburn,” said coach Stacy Schroeder. “After four straight points from Alyssa Bowe (sophomore), after the break, we were only down by 10 points. New Auburn went on a run after that.”
The Chiefs were unable to catch up and the game went to the Trojans, 64-30.
“We allowed too many turnovers in the second,” said Schroeder. “New Auburn took good care of the ball and they made things difficult for us on offense, with their pressure defense.”
Bowe led for the Chiefs, with 9 points, while junior Bralee Schroeder also had 9 points, as well as 7 rebounds. Senior Lauren Samardzich ended with 4 points on the night, with 6 rebounds and 7 blocks. Senior Teryn Close also had 4 points, as did freshman Haylee Ellis, who also finished with 3 rebounds.
Dec. 14 vs. Flambeau conference (L 51-40)
Next on the schedule, was Flambeau on the road, with Cornell outmatching the Falcons to begin the game.
“We came out playing strong against Flambeau, leading for most of the game,” said S. Schroeder. “We got into foul trouble in the last few minutes, and Flambeau was able to make their free throws, which gave them the lead; we ran out of time and flambeau ended up taking the win.”
B. Schroeder led in the 51-40 loss for Cornell, with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals, followed by Samardzich, 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks and 3 steals. Bowe contributed 6 points and 4 steals on the night, while Close added 4 points and 6 rebounds.
We saw a lot of good things happen, and also things we need to learn from and improve on,” said S. Schroeder.
