Cornell secures share of East Lakeland title

By Ginna Young

Success is a word that has become synonymous with Cornell’s volleyball program and this year is proving no different.

Oct. 3 vs. Bruce conference (W 3-0)

Bruce was the first opponent of the week to get by, which Cornell did handily. The Chiefs made quick work of the sets on the road, taking the wins in 25-10, 25-10 and 25-16.

Oct. 5 vs. Winter conference (W 3-1)

With a win over Winter, Cornell would have a share of the East Lakeland Conference championship, but they had to get by the Warriors first. On their home court, the Chiefs knew going in it would be a battle.

Cornell won the first set easily, 25-17, but the second set was much closer and even though the Chiefs prevailed, 25-23, it was too close for comfort. Winter capitalized on that and claimed the third set, 2523.

Determined not to lose their perfect record and to get that share of the conference crown, Cornell roared back with a 25-23 win, to move to 10-0 in the league, along with a 17-4 overall record.

Freshman Kylee Hetherington ended the night with 22 digs and 8 aces, while junior Briana Glaus led the team in kills, with 14, followed by senior Brooke Anderson, who had 13, as well as 15 digs. Senior Brooke Sime followed that up with 7 kills and 4 aces, and junior Bralee Schroeder notched 35 assists and 11 digs.

Moving forward, coach Amy Lorenzen shared at the Homecoming pep rally, that the goal is to win the whole conference and to continue the legacy that the senior-laden squad has built.

Oct. 7 vs. Lincoln non-conference (W 2-0)

To finish out the week, the Chiefs made the trek to Gilman, for a Saturday tournament, going up against Lincoln in their first match. While the sets were close, Cornell pulled out the 2-0 victory, winning both sets, 25-21.

Oct. 7 vs. Gilman non-conference (L 2-0)

Next up was host team Gilman, but Cornell couldn’t overcome the Pirates and fell in the first set, 25-13. The Chiefs battled back and narrowly came away with the win in the second set, but Gilman clung to the lead and took the win, 26-24.

Oct. 7 vs. Webster non-conference (W 2-0)

Cornell then faced Webster, but dropped the two sets played to the opposition, 2520 and 25-13.

Oct. 7 vs. Owen-Withee non-conference (L 2-0)

Owen-Withee was the final match of the day, but Cornell couldn’t sneak by them and lost two, hard-fought matches, 26-24 and 25-21.

Schroeder had 5 aces on the day, along with 9 kills and 52 assists, while Anderson ended with 25 kills and 21 digs. Glaus added 16 kills and 23 digs to the mix, with Sime notching 18 kills and 20 digs, and Hetherington coming away with 34 digs.
