Red Raiders stymied by the Hornets
Marathon’s varsity football squad on Friday couldn’t stop Colby’s rushing attack, resulting in a 35-0 road loss. The Hornets held a considerable advantage in rushing yards, 282 to 12, against the Red Raiders. Marathon had more success passing the football with 99 yards.
Red Raiders sophomore True Thurs lost 17 yards while running the ball. He thus finished the game with 17 rushing attempts for five yards.
Marathon senior quarterback Cooper Hoeksema completed eight of 16 passes for 81 yards and Thurs completed two of four passes for 18 yards. Senior Tyler Underwood caught six of nine passes for 80 yards.
Senior Luke Aschbrenner led Marathon’s defense with nine tackles against Colby. Thurs recorded eight tackles including one tackle for loss and a sack. Sophomore Landon Sneider had seven tackles. Senior Payton Lawrence obtained six tackles including two tackles for loss.
Marathon falls to 2-3 in the Marawood Conference and 3-4 overall this season. Marathon plays at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 6, at home against Pittsville in a battle of conference teams. Pittsville is also 2-3 in the Marawood and has a 4-3 overall record.
Edgar has another shutout
The Edgar varsity football team’s defense has been dominant all season. The Wildcats recorded their fifth straight shutout during Friday’s 36-0 road win against Pittsville.
Junior Jase Apfelbeck led Edgar’s defense with seven solo tackles, an assisted tackle, a quarterback hurry, a tackle for loss and an interception. Senior Brett Baumgartner recorded four solo tackles, an assisted tackle, one quarterback hurry and a tackle for loss. Senior Preston Dahlke had two solo tackles, four assisted tackles, a quarterback hurry and a tackle for loss. Sophomore Tucker Streit had three solo tackles, an interception and a pass knocked down.
Edgar senior Karter Butt ran the football 12 times for 117 yards and three touchdowns against Pittsville. Butt has rushed 118 times for 765 yards and 15 touchdowns thus far this season. Senior Kohlbe Weisenberger added six runs for 65 yards against Pittsville. Wildcats senior quarterback Teegan Streit completed five of eight passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Leyton Schuett caught two passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns.
Athens falls
The Athens varsity eight-man football team on Friday lost to Thorp, 52-0, on the road in a matchup of Central Wisconsin Conference-East teams. Thorp was ranked fifth in the eightman football standings heading into Friday’s game against Athens.
Sophomore Even Passehl led Athens’ offense with 21 rushes for 41 yards. Junior Kyle Schreiner paced the team’s special teams unit with four kickoff returns for 100 yards.
Athens plays two home games to conclude the regular season. Athens plays at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 6, against Greenwood and then on Friday, Oct. 13, against Gilman in its Homecoming contest.
