C-A swim picks up road win over Tomahawk
The Colby-Abby swim team chalked up another victory last Thursday in Tomahawk, defeating the Hatchets 104-48. The coop won nine of the 11 events en route to their fourth conference victory of the season, remaining in a tie with Medford for second place in the GNC.
While Tomahawk’s lack of depth certainly did not help them, as they left both the 200--yard medley relay and the 100yard butterfly open without entrants, the Colby-Abby squad still came out on top in the events the Hatchets were able to fill. The co-op outscored their opponents 86-48 in those competitions, with first and second place finishes in both the 200yard and 400-yard relays giving the Colby-Abby team a significant advantage.
The 200-yard freestyle relay was the most tightly contested event of the afternoon. The top three teams finished neckand- neck, all reaching the finish within roughly a second of each other. The first place team of Brezlyn Boyer, Lilly Graun, McKinely Meyer and Chloe Cihlar finished with a time of 2:01.12, narrowly edging out their teammates for the top spot. The team of Olivia Krause, Bryleigh Boyer, Zeline Lintrup and Jordan Jakel posted a time of 2:02.05, which was only twotenths of a second faster than the top Tomahawk relay, which finished with a time of 2:02.24.
The Colby-Abby relay of Krause, Lintrup, Jakel and Brezlyn Boyer took the top spot in the 400-yard freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 4:28.86. Cihlar, Meyer, Bryleigh Boyer and Madisyn Schraufnagel captured the second spot with a time of 4:34.68. Schraufnagel, Jakel, Lintrup and Sage Lueth also took the top spot in the 200-yard medley relay, putting in a time of 2:11.42.
Cihlar and Schraufnagel both picked up two individual event wins for the co-op. Cihlar took the top spot in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle races, ending with times of 57.99 seconds and 2:11.54 respectively. Meanwhile, Schraufnagel’s times of 2:29.99 in the 200-yard IM and 1:04.74 in the 100-yard backstroke blew away the rest of the competition, winning the first event by eight seconds and the second by nearly 15 seconds.
Lintrup and Jakel also grabbed individual event victories on Thursday. Lintrup won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 29.01, defeating Tomahawk’s top swimmer in the event, Maddie List, by over a second. Jakel, meanwhile, took first in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a time of 1:13.42.
Brezlyn Boyer and Hazel Flink both had two individual second place finishes against the Hatchets. Boyer took second in both the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke, recording times of 1:00.58 and 1:21.75 respectively. Flink, meanwhile, put up times of 1:22.85 in the 100-yard butterfly and 7:19.70 in the 500yard freestyle.
Following the win, the co-op is now 4-1 in the Great Northern Conference. They will face their toughest challenge of the season this Thursday, Oct. 5, when they host Rhinelander. Not only are the Hodags undefeated thus far this season, they have won in commanding fashion. Their closest dual meets were against Medford and Ladysmith, which they won by nearly 100 points, 134-36.
The start time for the meet is 5:30 p.m.
