gether to share the tackle on a kick return by Cox after the last Tetrault touchdown. Ustianowski got the tackle on Kroeplin’s last kickoff following a 13-yard touchdown run by Clayton’s Avery Starzecki with 2:14 left and he made a sure tackle for just a 3-yard gain on a play that led to a pass reception for South lineman Nick Berg of St. Mary’s.
Kroeplin, who played middle linebacker as a senior, filled the left outside linebacker/cornerback spot with Newman’s Thomas Bates manning the middle.
“I played that position freshman through junior year, but after playing in the middle my senior year it was just weird going back out there,” Kroeplin said. “I like it, but it’s different.”
The WFCA All-Star games serve as a fundraiser for Children’s Wisconsin Hospitals and each player and coach is required to raise $750 to participate. This year’s event raised $382,385, taking the total in the history of the games past the $5 million mark.
“You’re going to have the talent and talent makes it easier to put it together but you still have to have that cohesion,” Tallier said. “This year, even though Newman has ended Gilman’s season the past two years, I would say the Newman boys probably brought that cohesiveness to the team. They had two guys on each side. Their sense of humor, their joking around and just their demeanor on both sides of the ball really helped bring our team together.
When you can have that sour taste about someone ending your season the last two years and then have your picture taken with them and walk off the field hand-in-hand with them, that’s a pretty cool thing to see especially in this bigger picture of this thing called life.”
“It was a once in a lifetime experience,” Ustianowski said.
“I’m glad we got to do this one more time,” Kroeplin said.
