Marathon has a long win streak

Marathon’s American Legion Post 469 summer baseball team continues to win games and it now has an impressive 20-3 record this season.

Post 469 split a home doubleheader against Stratford’s American Legion squad on June 29. Stratford won the first game, 7-4, as Cody Radtke was the losing pitcher. Marathon’s leading hitters were Daniel LaQua and Blake Underwood each batting two for four, Tyler Underwood going two for three with a pair of RBIs and Grant Warren smacking a double.

Marathon beat Stratford, 13-5, in the nightcap as Cale Quaintance was the winning pitcher. Blake Underwood doubled and True Thurs collected a pair of RBIs. Drew Woelfel batted two for three with a double and four RBIs and Evan DeBroux was two for three with a pair of RBIs.

Post 469 swept a road doubleheader against the D.C. Everest Junior Legion team on June 30. Marathon beat Everest, 6-1, in the first game as Tyler Underwood struck out eight batters to earn the pitching win. Leading hitters for Post 469 were Cooper Hoeksema going two for three, Tyler Underwood going two for four with four RBIs, Quaintance and Blake Underwood both going two for four and Woelfel smacking a double.

Post 469 also won the second game against Everest, 7-1, as Thurs earned the pitching win. Marathon’s leading hitters were Radtke with a double, Blake Underwood batting two for three with a double and Braxton Jourdan, Quaintance and Hoeksema each hitting two for three at the plate.

Marathon swept a home doubleheader against Abby/Colby on July 6. Post 469 won the first game, 6-4, as Grant Warren earned the pitching victory. Blake Underwood doubled and Radtke batted two for two at the plate.

Post 469 also won the second game, 7-4, as Reed McCain was the wining pitcher. Quaintance doubled, Thurs batted two for three and Blake Underwood was two for three with three RBIs.

Marathon swept a home doubleheader against the Medford Junior Legion squad on July 7. Post 469 won the first game, 12-0, as Tyler Underwood struck out 13 batters to earn the pitching victory. Quaintance batted three for four with a double and a pair of RBIs, Thurs was two for four with a double and pair of RBIs, Blake Underwood was two for three with a pair of RBIs, Woelfel doubled, Radtke was two for three and Derek Vesely collected a pair of RBIs.

Post 469 also won the second game, 6-3, as Quaintance earned the pitching win. Radtke and Thurs each collected a pair of RBIs, Quaintance doubled, Hoeksema was two for three and Jorey Kunkel was two for three with a double.

Marathon won the first game against the Tomahawk Legion, 10-2, on Monday as Blake Underwood earned the pitching victory. Hoeksema doubled, Quaintance was two for four with a triple, Tyler Underwood was three for three with a triple and a pair of RBIs, Warren and Vesely each had two RBIs and LaQua batted two for two at the plate. The second game against Tomahawk was rained out.

Post 469 next plays at 6 p.m. this Thursday, July 13, in a home doubleheader against Rhinelander. it then plays 6 p.m. road doubleheaders against the Nekoosa Legion this Friday, july 14, and against the Medford Legion this Monday, July 17. Post 469’s final regular-season games are a home doubleheader at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 20 against Rib Lake.

The state American Legion Region 2 Class A touranment is on July 21-24.
