Doubleheader sweep pushes Rib Lake to 5-3 record so far

Rib Lake’s Legion baseball team is off to a 5-3 start for the summer and coming off a doubleheader sweep of Chequamegon Thursday in its home opener.
Rib Lake easily took care of game one by a score of 12-2. They won game two in dramatic fashion, coming back from an early deficit to win it 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Ty Niemi led off the inning with a walk and Slade Scheithauer got hit by a pitch. Talon Scheithauer bunted the runners into scoring position and Seth Borchardt followed that up with the gamewinning hit.
Slade Scheithauer pitched two threeup, three-down innings in relief with two strikeouts to keep it tight and allow Rib Lake to win it in the fifth.
At Tomahawk June 19, the team that got the early lead ended up losing each game in a doubleheader split.
In game one, Rib Lake jumped ahead 6-0 through an inning and a half and still led 6-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. But the Cubs scored five runs to tie it and then won it 7-6 in the sixth.
Talon Scheithauer, Seth Borchardt and Michael Borchardt had two hits apiece, while Aiden Stapleton and Slade Scheithauer had one each.
In game two, Rib Lake trailed 4-1 going into the top of the fifth but put together a six-run rally to win it. Tyler Matyka started it with a hit and Stapleton got another. Slade Scheithauer walked to load the bases, then two more walks sandwiched a hit batter to drive in three runs. Michael Borchardt singled one in and another hit batter knocked in one more.
On June 12 at Park Falls, Rib Lake lost the opener to Chequamegon 4-3 but came back to win game two 6-4. Dominic Quednow had three hits in the doubleheader and Andrew Wudi had two.
Rib Lake was at Merrill for a doubleheader Tuesday and is back at home tonight, Thursday, to face Medford in a pair of five-inning games. The first one starts at 6 p.m. The teams split a seasonopening doubleheader on June 8 and will play each other again on July 10 in Medford.
In between, Rib Lake is scheduled to host Ladysmith on June 6.
