Angell wins shot; Richter with two 2nds at Elite meet

Gilman’s Bailey Angell won the girls shot put championship while Medford got two second-place finishes from Meredith Richter and scoring from four other athletes during UW-Stout’s Elite Indoor Track and Field Invitational Friday evening.
Angell was the only Pirate to compete in the meet and defended her 2022 Elite shot put title. She didn’t quite equal last year’s winning throw of 37 feet, 2.5 inches but her throw of 36-10 Friday put her comfortably ahead of runner-up Sy’Rih Hartwig, a freshman from Athens who threw 35-6.5. Ladysmith’s Tori Thorpe was third at 35-3. Medford’s Lindsey Klapatauskas was 20th at 28-3.75 and Brooke Rudolph was 21st at 28-3.
Richter’s runner-up efforts came in the 400-meter and 1,600-meter races. The Raider junior finished the 1,600-meter run in 5:19.72 to trail Barron’s Fran Peterson by 5.05 seconds, but beat third-place runner Courtney Stadter of Mondovi by 5:20.99. Raider freshman Lindsay Kahn placed ninth in 5:54.16.
Richter then ran the 400-meter dash in 1:02.04 to edge out Ladysmith’s Marika Gago by 0.76 seconds for the runner-up spot. Durand senior standout Kendall Hagness won in 59.36 seconds.
Jaylin Machon scored five points for Medford by clearing 9-6 in the pole vault. That put her in fourth place. Arcadia’s Casidi Pehler won it at 11-6. Machon also took 11th in the 55-meter hurdle preliminaries at 9.89 seconds, missing the final by 0.13 seconds. Ella Dassow scored Medford’s final point by placing eighth in the 3,200-meter run at 13:39.92.
Kahn was 11th in 800-meter run at 2:40.46, while Ella Daniels was 18th at 2:44.53. Klapatauskas was 17th in the triple jump with a distance of 29-11 and Stacy Stolp was 26th at a season-best 28-3.75. Medford’s 1,600-meter relay team of Richter, Aliyah Pilgrim, Kahn and Lillie Gleichauf placed 15th out of 18 teams with its time of 4:43.32. Osceola won the race in 4:18.57, easily beating runner-up Prescott (4:26.19).
Gage Losiewicz was Medford’s top scorer in the boys meet. For the second straight outing, he hit 12-6 in the pole vault competition and that gave him fifth place out of 20 vaulters. The top four all went at least 13 feet, led by Mauston’s Eli Hallwood, who went 13-9.
Silas Wipf scored two points by placing seventh in the 800-meter run at 2:07.83, while Zach Rudolph wasn’t far behind, tak- ing ninth at 2:10.29 in his first 800 of the season. Vincent Seidel took 21st out of 36 entrants at 2:15.44. Benjamin Cihasky of Chippewa Falls won the race in 2:04.32, just ahead of Prescott’s Breckin Schommer (2:05.06).
Raider sophomore Evan Paul tied for 11th by clearing 5-6 in the high jump competition. Cory Lindahl tied for 24th at 5 feet.
Losiewicz added a 17th-place time of 56.87 seconds in the 400-meter dash. Josh Clark was 17th at 4:55.39 in the 1,600-meter run, while Adyn Gripentrog was 23rd at 5:01.5. Both were significant improvement over their first 1,600-meter races of the season a week earlier at Stout. Paxton Rothmeier was 21st in the 55-meter hurdle preliminaries at 9.61 seconds, a 0.33-second improvement over his first Stout race.
Losiewicz, Gripentrog, Lindahl and Rudolph teamed up for a ninth-place finish out of 18 teams in the 1,600-meter relay. Their time was 3:55.32. Osceola won in 3:39.36, beating Glenwood City by 2.32 seconds.
Lindahl was 19th in the long jump at a season-best 17-7.5. Seidel placed 25th in the triple jump at 34-9, while Owen Stockwell was 32nd at 33-8. Anakin Stokes was 26th in the 200-meter dash preliminaries at 24.89 seconds, while Lindahl was 33rd at 25.56 seconds. Stokes was 37th in the 55-meter dash prelims at 7.12 seconds.
Medford’s girls scored 22 points to place seventh out of 27 scoring teams, while Angell’s win gave Gilman 10 points, good for an 18th-place tie with Eau Claire North and Arcadia. Osceola won the meet with 66 points, 11 more than Chippewa Falls. Fall Creek was third with 43 points, followed by Barron (35), Holmen (34) and Marshfield (29).
Six points in the boys meet put Medford in 24th place out of 30 scoring teams in the boys meet. Osceola and Wausau West scored 49 points to tie for first place, 13 points ahead of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser. Holmen had 33 points, Glenwood City was fifth with 32 points and Colby was sixth with 30.
