Lake Holcombe falls to Dragons and Cardinals

In their final two games, the Lake Holcombe boys basketball squad stepped out of the conference, facing off with a couple tough opponents.
Feb. 20 vs. Siren non-conference (L 72-39)
Heading off for a faceoff with the Dragons, Lake Holcombe looked to come out on top as the season drew to a close, but they fell behind early on. Siren took a 25-point lead into the break and while the Chieftains managed to hold the Dragons to under 30 points, their own scoring fell short.
Siren reeled in the win, 72-39.
Sophomore Brian Strzok led for his team, with 14 points, followed by senior Harley Schroeder, with 10, while junior Taye Yeager ended with 6. Sophomore Ryley Craker was right behind, with 5 points, and freshman Tyler Hattamer added 2.
Feb. 21 vs. Luck non-conference (L 64-60)
The next night, the Chieftains hosted Luck, where scoring was better in the first half. Although Lake Holcombe had an 11-point lead coming out of the break, the Cardinals came out hot in the second half.
“Strzok and Yeager combined for nine, threes, but we couldn’t quite get it done, coming up short in the end,” said coach Joy Webster.
As time ran out, the Chieftains had to concede a slim defeat, 64-60.
Strzok led all scorers, with 24 points, while Yeager had 14, and Craker notched 12 points and 4 assists. Schroeder recorded 9 points on the night, as well as leading the team with 5 assists and 7 rebounds. Junior Trent Nitek also chipped in with 1 point and 4 rebounds, and Yeager, Craker and Strzok combined for 9 steals on the night.
