Senior gets career hoops milestone just in time

Edgar senior girls basketball player Reagan Borchardt scored her 1,000th career point on Thursday just in time for the party on Friday.

She swished a mid-range shot in the first half of Edgar’s 69-27 home non-conference win against Medford to achieve her coveted 1,000th career point. She was immediately congratulated by her coaches and teammates.

Reagan Borchardt then walked up Edgar’s home bleachers to receive a hug from her father, town of Wien dairy farmer Jason Borchardt. Her mother, Penny Borchardt, then walked down the stairs to give her a hug and a bouquet of flowers. Reagan Borchardt became the fourth Edgar girls basketball player in school history to score 1,000 career points and the 12th player among both boys and girls in school history to achieve the milestone.

“It’s pretty cool to follow in the footsteps of Makenna Guden, Holly Denfeld and Tianna Borchardt who are among the greatest basketball players in Edgar,” Reagan Borchardt said. “It was pretty special to receive hugs from my dad and mom. My dad has been working with me on my basketball skills since I was little so for him to come down the bleachers and give me a hug means a lot to me. My mom is my biggest supporter.”

Now all four of Edgar’s 1,000-career point girls basketball players will be in the gym at the same time during the Wildcats’ practices. Denfeld is an Edgar varsity assistant coach and Makenna Guden is the school’s new high school girls JV2 coach this season. Tianna Borchardt, who is a distant relative to Reagan Borchardt, enjoys helping out at Edgar’s practices by scrimmaging against members of the current team.

Reagan Borchardt only needed to score seven points against Medford and she finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Senior Leah Davis added 12 points.

Tom McCarty, Edgar head girls basketball coach, said he’s proud of his star player Reagan Borchardt for accomplishing the 1,000-career points milestone.

“She really didn’t play a ton of games her freshman year so to do this is pretty impressive,” he said. “It’s been fun to see her progression as a player.”
