Tigers play Royals tough in first half

Stratford’s varsity girls basketball team battled against highly-ranked Wisconsin Rapids Assumption on Thursday at home. It was a physical brand of basketball played with bodies on the floor going after loose balls. The Tigers only found themselves down, 16-15, at halftime to the No. 2 ranked Royals in Divison 5.

Unfortunately for Stratford, it couldn’t stay with Assumption in the second half. Royals freshman guard Jordan Jaglinski sank all five of her three-point shots in the second half to lead her team to a 51-36 win against Stratford. Jaglinski scored a gamehigh 17 points.

Senior Tessa Berg led Stratford with 13 points and senior Bailey Linzmaier added 11.

Athens defeats Prentice

The Athens varsity girls basketball squad defeated Prentice, 60-42, on Thursday at home.

Junior Jazelle Hartwig led the Bluejays with 19 points and six steals, and she was second on the team with seven rebounds. Junior Sophia Coker paced Athens with 12 rebounds and she added 16 points. Junior Addison Lavicka led the team with three assists and she contributed eight points. Senior Celina Ellenbecker was second on the team with five steals. Sophomore Bailey Hanke added five rebounds in the victory.

Athens is the only varsity girls basketball team in The Record-Review’s coverage area currently ranked in the state. The Bluejays are ranked No. 5 in this week’s wissports.net Divison 5 poll with a 15-1 record.

Edgar downs Newman

Edgar’s varsity girls basketball team defeated Newman Catholic, 5952, in Thursday’s road game.

Senior Reagan Borchardt led the Wildcats with 11 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Senior Leah Davis added 16 points and she tied with junior Makayla Wirkus for the team lead in steals with three each. Wirkus paced the squad with four assists and she added 10 points and seven rebounds. Davis had three assists.

Marathon beats Edgar

Marathon’s varsity girls basketball squad lost to Auburndale, 52-28, Thursday on the road. The team rebounded to defeat Edgar, 49-47, in Tuesday’s away game.

Senior Kali Prihoda led Marathon with 12 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Senior Ashley Phakitthong added 11 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

Marathon coach Jeff Schneider was proud of the adjustments his team made at halftime against Edgar.
