Marathon’s varsity volleyball squad on Thursday won a 3-1 non-conference home match victory against Stevens Point Pacelli.

Junior Ava Krueger led the Red Raiders with 15 attack kills and six ace serves, while Kali Prihoda paced the team with four blocks and Ashely Phakitthong with 28 pass assists.

The Red Raiders weren’t so lucky against the Phillips Loggers on Tuesday. Marathon lost, 3-1, to Phillips in the second place Marawood Conference Crossover match at Marathon High School.

Bluejays win crossover

The Athens volleyball team upended Edgar, 3-1, in Tuesday’s Marawood Conference Crossover first-place match in Marathon.

Athens holds a 2-1 advantage in the regular-season match series against Edgar this season. The Bluejays beat the Wildcats in the Merrill tournament. Edgar then downed Athens in the Marawood Conference Crossover tournament in Abbotsford, before falling to the Bluejays on Tuesday.

The two squads are finished playing each other this year because Edgar will compete in the WIAA Division 3 playoffs and Athens in Division 4 action starting next week Tuesday, Oct. 18. Edgar beat Athens in the Division 3 regional championship last season in Athens.

Athens concluded Saturday’s La Crosse Logan tournament with a 3-2 match record. Athens won 2-0 against both Arcadia and Prairie du Chien and also beat Winona Cotter, 2-1. Athens lost 2-0 to Westby and 2-1 to La Crosse Logan.

Danica Diethelm and Savannah Epping led Athens with three aces each against Prairie du Chien. Addison Lavicka had nine kills and 10 assists.

The Bluejays received a No. 2 seed in their WIAA Division 4 sectional and face No. 15 seed Wisconsin Valley Lutheran at 7 p.m. this Tuesday, Oct. 18, in a home regional quarterfinals match. Marshfield Columbus was awarded the No. 1 seed in the sectional.

Other crossover results

On Tuesday in Marathon, Prentice beat Wausau Newman in the third place Marawood Conference Crossover match.

Abbotsford downed Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in the fourth place match, Auburndale beat Rib Lake in the fifth place match and Stratford downed Chequamegon in the sixth place match.
