Athens wins Marawood North
Squad goes undefeated in conference

The Athens varsity volleyball shrugged off its struggles in Saturday’s Marawood Conference Crossover tournament in Abbotsford to easily beat Chequamegon on Tuesday. The Bluejays finish the Marawood North Conference regular season as undefeated conference champions.
Junior Addison Lavicka led Athens with 11 service aces against Chequamegon. Senior Savannah Epping contributed six aces, junior Sophia Coker five and senior Celina Ellenbecker three in the match victory against the Screaming Eagles. Junior Jazelle Hartwig paced the Bluejays with nine attack kills while Lavicka added eight and Sophia Coker five.
Jazelle Hartwig and Lavicka tied for the team lead in assists with 10 apiece. Epping paced Athens with eight digs.
Athens currently has a 29-5 match record this season and is ranked No. 2 in Division 4 this week behind No. 1 ranked Marshfield Columbus.
Marawood Crossover
Edgar’s volleyball squad won the second round against Athens in the regular season. Athens defeated Edgar 2-1 in the Merrill tournament earlier this season, but the Wildcats got revenge with a 2-1 match win against the Bluejays during Saturday’s Marawood Conference Crossover in Abbotsford.
The Wildcats won the first set, 25-12, against the Bluejays. Athens won the second set, 25-22, before Edgar won the third set, 15-10, to take the tournament match. The two squads will square off again at 4 p.m. this Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the Marawood Conference battle between the first place teams in the North and South at Marathon high school.
Edgar also beat Chequamegon, 2-0, and lost to Abbotsford, 2-0, during Saturday’s Marawood Conference Crossover tournament in Abbotsford. Edgar has a 17-5 match record this season and is ranked No. 8 in Division 3 this week.
Athens lost to Wausau Newman, 0-2, but it defeated Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 2-0, at the Marawood Conference Crossover tournament.
The all-Marawood Conference Crossover team consists of Reagan Borchardt and Emily Murkowski of Edgar, Lily Shields and Paige Guld of Wausau Newman, Haylee Soyk and Sydney Falteisek of Abbotsford, Savannah Epping of Athens and Ava Schill of Wisconsin Rapids Assumption.
