The Marathon varsity football team on Friday scored touchdowns on its first four offensive possessions, including eight of nine offensive possessions in the game during its 56-12 homecoming win against previously undefeated Abbotsford.

Marathon’s defense shut down Abbotsford freshman sensation Christian Fuentes, who ran for a single game school record of 373 yards in the team’s 63-27 home win against Iola-Scandinavia in the previous week. Fuentes was awarded the NewsChannel 9 Athlete of the Week after his performance against the Thunderbirds, in which he also scored five touchdowns on only 13 rushing attempts.

Abbotsford was ranked No. 10 in Division 6 heading into Friday’s contest against Marathon.

The Red Raiders held Fuentes to only nine carries for 33 yards while not letting him score. It was instead Marathon senior Matt Annis’ turn to rush for five touchdowns in a game. Annis rushed for 211 yards on 13 attempts, and he added two receptions from junior quarterback Cooper Hoeksema for 53 yards.

Hoeksema completed nine of 16 passes for 180 yards and one touchdown to senior Griffin Treankler, who had three receptions for 48 yards against Abbotsford. Junior Tyler Underwood had a pair of receptions for 47 yards in the victory and senior Daniel LaQua added a pair of receptions for 23 yards. Hoeksema also ran four times for 12 yards and a touchdown. Freshman True Thurs rushed the football four times for 25 yards and a touchdown, and senior battering ram Hector Pintor ran the ball 12 times for 44 yards.

Marathon juniors Luke Aschbrenner and Peyton Lawrence led the team’s defense with six tackles each, and senior Drew Love had a quarterback sack. The Red Raiders improve their record to 3-2 while the Falcons drop to 4-1 this season.

Tigers win third straight

Stratford’s varsity football squad dismantled Nekoosa, 50-14, on Friday at Marshfield Senior High School to remain unbeaten in the Central Wisconsin Conference (CWC)-Large this season. Amherst and Stratford are the lone undefeated teams in the conference with 3-0 records.

Junior Gavin Leonhardt scored right away for Stratford on an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and the Tigers never let off the gas pedal from this point forward against the Papermakers.

Stratford junior Koehler Kilty ran the football 13 times for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and he also caught two passes for 34 yards and a touchdown.

Tigers senior quarterback Braeden Schueller completed seven of 11 passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns, and he also ran five times for 19 yards and a touchdown. Ashton Wrensch hauled in four catches for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Stratford senior Connor Weigel scored a 32-yard rushing touchdown and sophomore Jack Tubbs ran the football six times for 49 yards in the big victory against Nekoosa.

The Tigers improve their overall record to 3-1-1 while the Papermakers are still searching for their first win this season.
