The Spencer-Columbus football team is still looking for its first win of the season after falling 42-7 at home against Weyauwega-Fremont on Sept. 9. The Rockets scored on their first offensive drive of the night but couldn’t find the end zone again, while the Warhawks cashed in on big play after big play to build their lead.

Spencer-Columbus fell to 0-4 with the setbak, with its next game on Sept. 16 on the road at Amherst.

After the Warhawks scored on their first possession on a 20-yard pass play, the Rockets responded with a long drive. Sullivan Melander banged into the end zone from five yards out at the 5:23 mark of the first period and Mac Koniecny’s extra-point kick tied the score at 7-7.

Neither team could mount a scoring drive again until late in the first half. Cashten Hoffman swam through the Rocket defense for a 64-yard run with 1:49 left before the break that carried the Warhawks to a 14-7 lead.

The second half was all Weyauwega-Fremont. The Warhawks first scored on a 30-yard pass play, and Hoffman then caught a pair of 69-yard touchdown passes. Scoring runs of 63 yards and 24 yards in the fourth period closed the scoring.

The Rockets compiled 341 yards of offense, but couldn’t turn them into points. Spencer-Columbus ran 57 times for 316 yards, with Melander churning out 129 yards on 22 carries. Carter Luepke added 91 yards on 15 tries and Kyle Nieman carried 16 times for 88 yards.

Teddy Meyer attempted 10 passes with five completions for 25 yards and an interception.

The Rocket defense gave up 423 total yards, including 262 through the air. The Warhawks passed 13 times with 11 completions, four of them resulting in touchdowns. Hoffman had two catches for 138 yards and rushed eight times for 91 yards.

Rocket coach Jason Gorst said there were positive signs in the game.

“We ran the ball very hard tonight, but we need to get better at finishing drives,” he said. “ Defensively we need to prevent the big play.”
