The Colby-Abby swim team won their second meet of the season last Thursday in Colby. They defeated Mosinee 92-64 in a competitive dual meet between the two conference opponents.

After the team’s prior meet, where they faced a Lakeland team that had only two swimmers, this contest gave them a little better idea of what to expect in future dual meets. While Mosinee did not have an overly large team themselves, both sides were much more evenly matched when it came to numbers. However, the Colby-Abby team seemed a bit better when it came time to get into the pool.

The home team won eight of the 11 scored varsity events and six of the last seven. After a tight first half of events, the Hornets started to pull away towards the middle of the meet, where they received 10 points in the 100-yard butterfly, an event where Mosinee did not field a single swimmer, and after taking the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle. Late in the meet, Mosinee stood to make up some ground in the 100 yard breaststroke, having three entries to Colby-Abby’s one, but Olivia Krause secured the win by beating out Mosinee’s Morgan Hoernke by less than two-tenths of a second in the closest event of the evening.

Brezlyn Boyer finished first in every event she participated in on Thursday. After winning her individual events, which included the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:21.25 and the aforementioned 100-yard butterfly in 1:15.45, she was also part of two winning relays. The relay team of Boyer, Krause, Lilly Graun and Jordan Jakel took first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:02.81 and the team of Boyer, Jakel, Hailey Meyer, and Chloe Cihlar won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:28.90.

Madisyn Schraufnagel also won two individual events for the co-op swim team. She beat out Mosinee’s Haylie Kluz by almost four seconds in the 200yard IM, posting a time of 2:28.80. She once again defeated second-place Kluz in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:08.79.

Jakel rounded out the home team’s individual event winners. She claimed first in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:06.80. Colby-Abby also took second and third in the event that saw the most entries, with Hazel Flink taking second with a time of 1:18.53 and McKinley Meyer not far behind her with a time of 1:20.69. Jakel also finished second behind Boyer in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:29.56.

Other second place finishes included Flink in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 35.13, Cihlar in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:20.08, Hailey Meyer in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 7:24.15, and the relay of Schraufnagel, Krause, Graun and McKinley Meyer in the 200-yard medley.

These results should serve as a confidence boost to a still relatively small and young Colby-Abby team as they head into a tougher part of their schedule.

The Colby-Abby team will host another dual meet against Antigo this coming Thursday, September 15. It is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will once again be held in the Colby high school pool.
