Greenwood bounces back from opening loss for 40-point win
After absorbing a bruising 62-8 loss to Chippewa Falls McDonell in its season opener on Aug. 26, the Greenwood 8-man football team turned the tables on Sept. 2 to whip New Auburn 48-8. The Indians turned four first-half Trojan fumbles into a 34-0 halftime lead and took their foot off the throttle in the second half of the easy win.
Greenwood collected 156 yards on the ground and another 121 yards through the passing game as it kept the New Auburn defense off balance with a varied attack. Christian Thomas ran for 129 yards on 14 carries and Ryver Glynn connected with receivers on five of six pass attempts for 121 yards and three scores. Thomas, Gage Ludovic and Hayden Rakovec all caught touchdown passes from Glynn.
The first Indian points of the night came midway through the first quarter on Glynn’s 23-yard pass to Rakovec. When New Auburn fumbled on its next possession, Thomas was in the Trojan backfield to scoop up the loose ball and sprint 35 yards to the end zone. Greenwood made it 20-0 in the first period on a 55-yard Thomas run.
Midway through the second period, Glynn found Ludovic open down the middle and behind his defender for a 25-yard scoring strike. The final first-half touchdown came on a 7-yard Thomas run with 1:29 left on the clock.
Greenwood added points in the third quarter on a 53yard Glynn-to-Thomas pass play and another Thomas touchdown run.
New Auburn scored its only points on a 15-yard run on what would be the final play of the night. The referees stopped the game with 10:39 to go in the fourth quarter due to weather.
Greenwood’s next game is a Sept. 9 road trip to Prairie Farm.
