Trap aims high at state in Nekoosa Trap aims high at state in Nekoosa

The Colby Hornets trap team shot their shots in Nekoosa on June 11 for a state title.

The team has practiced shooting in all types of conditions. It was well worth the practice on Saturday as they had to shoot in the pouring rain. Head coach Dan Hederer said one shooter decided he didn’t need his raincoat and came back soaking wet.

The Colby shooters broke up into two teams: varsity and junior varsity. The players shot at 50 clays each round, completing two rounds. The round is broken up into a section of 25 clays each. After shooters have completed two rounds, their scores were added up for a maximum total of 100 clays.

Grady Steinman led the varsity team with a first round of 47 and second round of 46 for a total of 93 which placed him in a tie for 59th place in the varsity division. Tucker Hayes shot 42-43 for a total score of 85, good enough for 186th place. Isaac Raatz shot 41-36 in his two rounds for a final score of 77 and a 270th place finish. Over 300 shooters participated in the varsity division.

Jacob Hoppe led the junior varsity team with a total of 86, which gave him 27th place in the JV category. Brennen Geiger placed 35th, with a total score of 85. Will Hennes shot 42-41 for a total of 83, good enough for 51st place. Braxton Meyer shot 40-41 for a total of 81 which gave him 73rd place. Tyler Timmers shot a total of 76 clays to take 111th place. Other shooters were: Tristen Smazal, 75 clays and 122nd place, and Braiden Johnson, 69 clays and 158th place.
