Zastrow second, Loyal relay team fourth at state meet
From among the small group of female athletes from Loyal, Spencer and Greenwood who traveled down to Veterans Memorial Stadium at UW-La Crosse for the WIAA State Track and Field competition on June 3-4, only one came away with a runner-up title. Senior Leah Zastrow of Spencer repeated her achievement from last season by taking second in the pole vault, while the athletes from Loyal and Greenwood each placed well among the top competitors from Division 3.
Zastrow completed her last vaults as a Rocket during competition on Saturday of the State Championships, earning her second-place finish by reaching the same height as she did at sectionals the week before, vaulting 11’6”. The height was just three inches shy of first-place finisher Miranda Firari of Dodgeland, who reached a height of 11’9”.
From Loyal, the 4x100m relay team had the best run at state, taking fourth place as a team. Members of the team were Leah Scherer, Sheila Tellock, Alyssia Zvolena, Aubre Robida and Noelle Teschner and Haven Peroshek as alternates. The group ran a 51.01 during the finals of the 4x100m run on Saturday -- breaking the school record the same team had made last season at state competition by more than two-tenths of a second -- and finished in fourth place overall.
The Loyal girls 4x200m relay team also competed and placed at state. Molly Zvolena, Sheila Tellock, Lisa Steffens, Leah Scherer and Alyssia Zvolena and Haven Peroshek as alternates, ran the race. They crossed the finish line with a combined time of 1:51.35, which placed them in 16th.
Individually, Alyssia Zvolena, Sheila Tellock and Abrial Kubista placed for Loyal. Zvolena jumped 5’2” in the high jump, finishing in sixth place overall. Tellock took 10th in the pole vault, reaching a height of 9’, and Kubista placed 11th in the triple jump with a leap of 33’8.25”.
From Greenwood, Lauren Ingold ended her time as an Indian after the shot put event was completed on Friday. She placed 11th overall with her best throw of 34’4”.
The Loyal track and field team was the only local team to earn points at the state meet. The team earned eight points in total, finishing in 26th place.
