Colby girls punch above division in Marshfield

The Colby Hornets girls track and field team attended one of the more unusual meets of the track season on Thursday, April 7. The Hornets were back in Marshfield, only this time for a meet that was focused more on relays.

The Hornets were the smallest school in Marshfield, with multiple WIAA D-1 programs present. Marshfield took top honors, finishing with 118 points, followed by D.C. Everest in second with 116 points and Colby in third with 82 points.

The Hornets had multiple finishes in the top eight, including several events in which they placed first. Among those first place finishes was junior Hayden Willner in the long jump and senior Malayna Rieck in the shot put.

Willner leapt to first place with a distance of 14 feet, while Rieck threw the shot put 34 feet, one inch. The Hornets also captured the 4x440-yard relay with a time of 4:40.57, and the 4x880-yard relay in 11:16.02.

The names of the participants of these, and other Hornet relay teams that competed last Thursday, were not available upon publication.

Kaylee Podevels tied for second in the high jump with a cleared height of five feet, a new indoor PR for last year’s state qualifying high jumper. Also in second place was Colby’s 400-800-800-1200-meter medley relay team in 11:31.58.

Senior Elizabeth Winters took third in the 60-yard dash with her PR of 8.52 seconds. Junior Willow Oehmichen tied her school record height in the pole vault, taking third with a height of nine feet, six inches. The 4x80-yard relay was also third in 44.07 seconds, as was the 4x880yard relay in 12:37.37.

In fourth place was the 4x160-yard relay was fourth in 1:27.91, the 4x320-yard relay in 3:24.61, senior Daisy Feiten with an indoor PR of eight feet in the pole and Winters in the shot put with an indoor PR throw of 22 feet, 6.5 inches.

The 100-100-200-400-meter medley relay squad took fifth in 3:00.13, along with the 400-800-800-1200-meter medley relay squad in 13:15.19. Lydia Decker cleared four feet, four inches in the high jump for another Colby fifth place result.

Winters’ big day in Marshfield continued with a pair of fifth place results in two events - the softball throw and long jump, with distances of 18 feet and 11 feet, 4.5 inches. Winters also added sixth place in the 440-yard dash in 1:24.12.

Trinity Severson took seventh in the 13 feet, and 1/4 inch, as well as the 4x160-yard relay in 1:32.42 and the 4x440-yard relay in their time of 5:12.10. Scoring Colby’s final points was the 100-100-200-400-meter medley relay team that took eighth place in 3:13.62.

The Colby boys and girls were scheduled to compete at the Pittsville Invitational this Tuesday, but that meet was cancelled due to incoming inclement weather. The Hornets next meet will be at at Stanley-Boyd on Friday, April 22. Events are set to begin at 4:15 p.m.
