NASP STATE ARCHERY TOURNAMENT

Gilman wins 3-D team title by 1 over Medford

Youth archers from Gilman’s and Medford’s programs won individual championships and the two schools nearly tied for the 3-D team state title during Wisconsin’s National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) state tournament, held March 11-27.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources sponsored the Wisconsin State NASP tournament and has helped host previous in-person state tournaments in Wisconsin Dells before the pandemic.

Due to Covid-19 precautions, the 1,200 archers from 51 public, private and home schools competed with teammates from their homes or nearby schools. The scores were verified by an adult with no affiliation with the teams and then provided to tournament organizers.

Gilman’s Tatum Weir and Colton Lang were the county’s biggest individual winners. Weir won the girls high school state championships in both the bullseye and 3-D shoots, while Lang was the state champion in both shoots in the elementary boys age group, which consists of fourth and fifth graders.

Gilman’s Casey Grunseth won the boys bullseye state title with a score of 296, just four away from perfection, while Medford’s Landen Viergutz won the 3-D high school boys championship and took third in the bullseye shoot.

Gilman won the high school team state title in the 3-D by one point over Medford in an incredibly close result, 1,672-1,671. Medford also was second in the middle school standings with 1,566 points, 32 points behind St. Patrick’s Catholic of Sparta. Gilman was fifth and Medford was seventh in the high school bullseye team standings, while Medford was fifth in the middle school competition.

Bullseye highlights

The bullseye virtual tournament included 1,197 archers, including 621 boys and 576 girls. Archers take 15 shots at their targets from 10 meters and 15 more shots from 15 meters. Thirty shots in the 10-point circle would result in a perfect score of 300.

Grunseth’s score of 296 was the highest one registered in the entire state. He hit the 10-point circle on 26 shots and the nine-point ring on four. The Gilman junior was four points ahead of East De Pere senior Zachary Columb, while Viergutz was five points behind with his 291 that included 24 10-point shots.

Weir had the top female score in the state and was fifth overall with her 290 that included 21 tens. She won the high school competition by two points over Grayce Bottlemy of Owen-Withee.

Lang, a fifth grader, won the boys elementary competition with a 286 that included 17 10-point shots. He won his age group easily, finishing 21 points ahead of runner-up Dylan Reineke of Thorp.

Other top-10 locals included Gilman sophomore Dalton Wisocky, who shot a 288 to take seventh among 237 high school boys, Medford sophomore Jenna Wickersheim, who shot a 283 to place seventh among 238 high school girls, Medford eighth grader Ezra Hillebrand, who shot a 282 to place fourth out of 277 middle school boys, Gilman fifth grader Wyatt Stephens, who shot a 259 to place fifth out of 107 elementary boys and Medford fifth grader Karson Ecklund, who shot a 250 to place 10th among elementary boys.

Team scores are based off the top 12 individuals with at least four archers of each gender. Gilman’s high school team scored 3,263 points, while Medford scored 3,226. Cadott won the title with 3,400. Medford’s middle school team had 3,147 points. St. Patrick’s won with 3,237.
