Locals compete at WWF state; two from C-G-LH place

WWF STATE FOLKSTYLE CHAMPIONSHIPS

It was a tough weekend of competition for four members of the Medford Wrestling Club who competed in the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation’s Kids Folkstyle state championships at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

Jaxson Fallos, an addition to the state field during the week after finishing fourth at the previous weekend’s regional qualifier, got one win in the 210-pound weight class of the 2007-08 age group. Wrestling in a bracket of 22 competitors, Fallos drew a first-round bye and was pinned in 43 seconds by Jack Steinmeyer of the Victory School of Wrestling in the round of 16. Fallos stayed alive with a consolation pin in 1:08 over Maxon Erchull of New Berlin but his run ended with a 7-3 loss to Nehemiah Evans of Appleton.

Two Medford wrestlers were in the 51-pound weight class of the 2013-14 age group. Oakley Sperl went 0-2, falling 6-2 to Payton Jeanquart of Southern Door in the first round and 5-1 to Kayden Showers of Baraboo in his first consolation match. Talon Judnic also went 0-2, losing by pin in 32 seconds to eventual champion Brody Hebel of Denmark in the round of 16 and by pin in 43 seconds Wyatt Robinson of Parkview in his first consolation match. Caden Olson went 0-2 at 82 pounds of 2009-10 age group. He was pinned in 1:40 by Logan Boehnlein of Seymour in the first round and in 2:44 by Samuel Ellerman of the Aviators club in consolation competition.

Avery Losiewicz qualified for state as a regional champion in the girls 125-pound weight class for the 2007-08 age group, but she was unable to attend while competing in Medford in the Rainbow Gymnastics club’s home meet.

C-G-LH places two

Three wrestlers from the Cornell-Gilman-Lake Hol- combe area also competed and two of them were place winners.

Peyton Hugh of Cornell, who wrestles for the Crass Trained Wrestling Club, won his second straight state title. This one came in the 57-pound weight class of the 2013-14 age group. In a bracket of 23 wrestlers, Hugh got a first-round bye and then pinned Mason Tischer of Mauston in 1:51 and earned a 14-1 major decision over Ryder Mitchell of De Pere to reach the semifinals. After a 5-1 win over Crass Trained’s Rylan Haremza, Hugh clinched his title by pinning Collin Ysquierdo of Nekoosa in 1:42.

Taydyn Angell of Gilman got a first-round bye and then lost his round-of-16 match 4-2 to eventual semifinalist Jack Simmons of Prairie du Chien. He then wrestled back to fifth place out of 18 wrestlers.

In the consolation bracket, Angell pinned Kaden Zupke of Fond du Lac in 47 seconds, Bruce McDonald of Red Hot Wrestling in 3:31, Landon Smith of Manawa in 2:18 and Chase Schams of La Crosse in 4:09. In a rematch, Simmons got his revenge by pinning Angell in 1:10, but Angell bounced back to win the fifth-place match 9-3 over Alexander Poppe of Marathon.

Kadyn Jones of Lake Holcombe went 2-2 at 115 pounds in the 2009-10 age class. After a 7-6 loss to Cole Swiggum of North Crawford-Seneca, Jones was a 12-0 winner over Antigo’s Michael Hofrichter and a 5-3 winner over Bryson Smith of the Badger Wrestling Club before bowing out with a 9-0 loss to Trig White of Prairie Farm.
