MORE MEDFORD BASKETBALL HONORS

Two significant awards from the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association have gone to members of Medford’s boys basketball team in the past week following the team’s 21-7 season and run to the WIAA Division 2 sectional final.

Junior Logan Baumgartner made the 25-member honorable mention list for the WBCA Division 2 All-State team, which was announced on Monday. It is the second straight year a Raider has made that list. Peyton Kuhn was on it a year ago.

Also, senior Joey Sullivan has earned an invitation to play in the 2022 WBCA All-Star Games. The boys games are planned for Thursday, June 30 at JustAGame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Baumgartner was named the Great Northern Conference’s co-Player of the Year and had an outstanding third season with the Raiders. He led the GNC in scoring by averaging 21.4 points per game and 3.7 3-pointers per game in 12 league contests. He was the league’s fifthleading rebounder by pulling down 6.4 boards per GNC outing, he ranked second in steals at 2.7 per game and he was fifth in assists by averaging 2.8 per game.

His free throw percentage (76.1%, 35 of 46) ranked third in the conference. He shot a solid 46.8% from the field in league play, making 89 of 190 shots overall. He was 44 of 110 from 3-point range (40%). Overall in 28 games, Baumgartner averaged 21.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

The 12-member All-State team and the honorable mention list feature several names familiar to Medford fans.

The first team includes La Crosse Central senior Devon Fielding and Oshkosh North freshman Xzavion Mitchell. Fielding scored 14 points and hit two big shots late in La Crosse Central’s 56-47 win over Medford in the sectional final at Eau Claire North on March 12. He also had 11 points and five rebounds in Central’s 74-68 non-conference win over the Raiders on Jan. 15. Fielding’s 3-pointer in the final seconds Friday sealed Central’s thrilling 52-51 win over Westosha Central in a WIAA Division 2 state semifinal in Madison. Pewaukee won its second straight title by beating La Crosse Central 67-48 in Saturday’s state championship.

Mitchell hit 14 of 20 shots and scored 30 points in Oshkosh North’s 80-64 win over Medford on Dec. 29 in the Sheboygan North tournament. Baumgartner had 28 points and hit six of 13 3-pointers in that game. He had 19 points and eight rebounds in the sectional final and he toford

taled 29 points while hitting six of 11 3s and added seven rebounds and three assists in the regular-season loss to Central.

Honorable mentionees include All-GNC selection Davin Stoffel of Mosinee, Noah Compan of La Crosse Central, Josiah Butler of Fox Valley Lutheran, CJ Campbell of New Richmond, Bailey Turenne of Merrill, Noah Feddersen of Menomonie and Steven Clark of Oshkosh North, all players the Raiders faced this season as well as Tyler Orr of Rice Lake, a player Medford saw twice last year.

Compan had 26 points and eight rebounds in the sectional final against Medford. Butler had a huge 39-point outing in Medford’s 68-66 regional final win over the Foxes. Baumgartner had 24 points in that game. Campbell had 25 points in Medford’s 72-63 win over New Richmond on Jan. 25. Clark had 27 points against the Raiders in Sheboygan. Stoffel averaged 15 points and seven rebounds in Mosinee’s season split with Medford. The Raiders held the 6-9 Feddersen to 10 points and six rebounds in a 46-33 win on Jan. 18 and limited Turenne to seven points in an 88-60 blowout on Dec. 7 where Baumgartner scored 36 points and had 13 rebounds.

The rest of the Division 2 All-State team includes repeat selections from a year ago Marcus Tomashek of Ashwaubenon, Max Weisbrod of DeForest and junior Milan Momcilovic of Pewaukee as well as seniors Jack Campion of Milton, Learic Davis of Milwaukee Bradley Tech, Colin Hardrick of Wauwatosa West, Ashton Janowski of Pewaukee, Danilo Jovanovich of Whitnall and Jack Rose of Westosha Central and sophomore Kon Knueppel of Wisconsin Lutheran.

All-Star game

Sullivan also follows Kuhn as a Med- representative in the Division 2 boys All-Star Game. Kuhn scored four points in last year’s game on the winning team that was coached by Medford’s Ryan Brown and Bob Komanec and Medford alum Paul Henrichs.

Sullivan’s invitation follows a senior season where he was a unanimous All-GNC choice. The 5-9 guard ranked fourth in the GNC at 15.5 points per game, led the league at 3.3 steals per contest, ranked third in assists at 3.7 per game and tied for eighth in rebounding at 5.2 per outing.

Overall in 28 games, he finished at 16.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.57 steals per game. He surpassed 20 points eight times during the season, including a 27-point game in a 79-63 win over Plymouth at Sheboygan North on Dec. 30, 26 points and nine rebounds in the win over New Richmond and 25 points in the regional final win at Fox Valley Lutheran where he hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer. He had a 23-point, 12-rebound double-double in a 62-39 win over Rhinelander on Feb. 8.

The WBCA All-Star Games not only showcase the state’s top senior talent but they serve as a fundraiser for several of the state’s highest profile charities. Sullivan already has a fundraising page set up on the WBCA website, wisbca.org. Go to the events tab at the top of the page and click on All-Star Game. Click on boys roster on the left side of that page and then click on the Boys D2 Red link.

Weisbrod, Tomashek, Feddersen, Hardrick, Fielding, Compan, Campbell and first-team All-GNC pick Jacksen Smith of Rhinelander are among the invited players on the D2 Red roster.
