Some local student archers turned their best rounds ever into individual championships during the National Archery in the Schools Program shoot held Friday and Saturday at Medford Area Middle School.

Back to an in-person event after being held virtually in 2021, the two-day event drew 451 entrants in the bullseye shoot (245 boys and 206 girls) and 168 entrants in the 3-D tournament (93 boys and 75 girls) with participants representing schools from throughout central and western Wisconsin.

Medford Area Senior High junior Landen Viergutz was one of the weekend’s big individual winners. His personal- best scores of 296 out of a possible 300 in the bullseye shoot and 294 in the 3-D shoot made him the top-scoring archer in both events. He helped lead Medford to the high school team championship in the 3-D tournament.

Medford sophomore Hailey Reilly also shot a personal-best 296 in the bullseye shoot to win the girls high school individual championship and nearly earn the title of top overall shooter for the tournament. Viergutz hit the 10-point scoring ring on 27 of his 30 shots –– 15 from 10 meters and 15 from 15 meters –– while Reilly hit it 26 times.

Reilly, junior Kirsten Weix (289) and sophomore Jenna Wickersheim (287) were the top three finishers in the high school girls competition.

Medford had two teams in high school and middle school competition. Medford I took second in the high school standings with 3,361 points, just 36 behind champion Cadott. Medford II was seventh with 3,011.

Gilman junior Casey Grunseth was second in the boys standings with a 290 that included 22 10-point shots. Medford’s Aidan Ball set a personal-best score of 289 that put him in fifth place out of 95 high school boys. In the middle-school standings, Medford I scored 3,107 points to take second behind Stratford’s 3,214 points. Gilman ranked fifth with 3,039 points and Medford II was seventh out of nine teams with 2,927 points.

Gilman eighth grader Dawson Robinson easily set a new personal-best with a score of 282 and won the boys individual championship. He had 17 10-point shots. Medford’s Ezra Hillebrand was fourth with a personalbest 275, Ashton Behling was eighth at 274 and Jake Erl was 10th with a personal-best 271.

On the girls’ side, Medford seventh grader Kella Gebert was the top local shooter with a score of 268, good for 14th out of 88 entrants. Gilman’s Reece Weir was 15th at 267.

Gilman fifth grader Colton Lang won the elementary division’s boys individual title with a score of 267 that included 12 10-point hits. Pirate Wyatt Stephens was fifth out of 43 boys with a 251. Medford’s Kyra Scheithauer was eighth out of 24 girls at 216.

3-D results

In the 3-D shoot, Medford’s score of 1,694 easily won the five-team high school competition. Marshfield was a distant second with 1,567 points and Gilman was fourth with 1,503. Medford took second in the middle school competition with 1,494 points, trailing Marshfield by 33. Gilman was fourth with 1,475 points.

Viergutz’s 294 and a championship score of 293 by Weix on the girls’ side led Medford to the high school team title. Weix’s score also was a personal best and included 25 10-point shots. Veirgutz also had 25 tens. Wickersheim’s 285 placed second in the high school girls standings, while Medford freshman Tana Rappe was third with a personal-best 276, Mattie Gebert was sixth with a 272 and senior Alexis Fleegel was 10th with a personalbest 263.

Grunseth was second for Gilman behind Viergutz with his 288. Ball was eighth for Medford at 274.

Robinson led locals in the middle school boys standings with a 268 that placed second behind the 281 registered by Marshfield’s Dylann Brogan. Medford had a run after that with Behling being sixth (263), Hillebrand seventh (262), Evan Czarnezki ninth (256) and Wyatt Meyer in 10th (253).

Weir took third out of 33 girls with her score of 258. Lang was the elementary boys runner-up at 252, while Stephens was third at 227.
