Edgar girls beat Stratford by 10 points
‘Cats fall to the Loggers
The Edgar varsity girls basketball team rebounded from Thursday’s home loss to Phillips, 55-37, to beat Stratford, 43-33, at home on Tuesday.
Down 17-0 against Phillips, Edgar came all the way back to get within three points, at 25-22, of Phillips after guard Leah Davis’ made three-point basket in the first half. Phillips senior guard Jada Eggebrecht sank a shot a the buzzer to give the Loggers a 28-23 half-time advantage.
Edgar junior forward Reagan Borchardt’s bucket to open the second half brought the Wildcats within three points, at 28-25, of the Loggers but that was the closest they’d get.
Borchardt led Edgar with 13 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. Jada The Loggers improved their record to 16-2 overall this season.
The Edgar Wildcats downed Marawood South Conference foe Stratford by 10 points on Tuesday. Edgar’s defense held Stratford leading scorer Lauren Kraus on only three points, although she did have 14 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Sophomore Makayla Wirkus led Edgar with 13 points while senior Karlin Lipinski and Borchardt added nine points each in the victory. Junior Tessa Berg paced Stratford with 14 points and sophomore Bailey Linzmaier had eight.
Edgar improves its record to 8-6 in the Marawood South and 14-7 overall this season, while Stratford falls to 5-8 in the Marawood South and 9-11 overall.
Tigers down the Eagles
Stratford dismantled Chequamegon, 73-13, on Thursday at home.
Kraus led the Tigers with 19 points and junior guard Lexie Christopherson added 14. Berg and freshman Kalyn Schueller chipped in 10 points apiece. Chequamegon has only one win this season.
‘Jays lose pair of games
The Athens varsity girls basketball team has lost two straight games against tough opponents Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 64-38, Thursday on the road and against Phillips, 81-50, on Tuesday at home.
Senior McKennzie Schug led Athens with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the road defeat to Assumption. Sophomores Addison Lavicka and Jazelle Hartwig added eight points each. Sophomore Sophia Coker paced the Bluejays with four steals and two blocks.
Athens is in second place behind Phillips in the Marawood North Conference with a 9-4 record and is 16-4 overall this season.
Marathon wins games
The Marathon varsity girls basketball team beat Abbotsford, 46-40, at home on Thursday and Wausau Newman, 45-35, on the road Tuesday.
Senior guard Allison Wokatsch led Marathon with 14 points against Abbotsford while senior Jada Prihoda added 12 and junior Kali Prihoda 10. Junior Ashley Phatkitthong paced the Red Raiders with nine rebounds and she tied for the team lead in assists with Kali Prihoda with four apiece. Jada Prihoda led the squad with four steals.
Wokatsch led Marathon with 24 points against Newman while Kali Prihoda had 10. Jada Prihoda paced the team with eight rebounds and Phakitthong with four assists.
Marathon improves its record to 9-4 in the Marawood South Conference and 12-8 overall this season.
