Wolfpack down to two at SCF; three wrestlers lose just one match in quad
WOLFPACK WRESTLING
Two wrestlers from the Cornell-Gilman- Lake Holcombe Wolfpack competed in Saturday’s St. Croix Falls Wrestling Classic.
Junior Braeden Person was part of a strong field in the 152-pound weight class and finished 1-2 for the day. He started with a 3-0 win over Chad Baumann of Ogilvie, Minn. to reach the quarterfinals. There, he came out on the short end of a 6-3 decision with Osceola’s Addison Udin (27-10).
In the consolation bracket, Person (2311) was eliminated in a 4-2 overtime loss to Trevor Arentz (16-8) of West Salem-Bangor.
Freshman Preston Fredrickson won the JV 126-pound competition by going 3-0. He pinned Ogilvie’s Talon Baker in 3:46 and Superior’s Fjeordi Johnson in 1:14 to reach the final against Cameron’s Zach Zappa. Fredrickson won that match 9-3.
The Wolfpack is back on the mat tonight, Thursday, for a Lakeland Conference quad at Bruce. Clear Lake and the Luck Co-op will also be there.
The conference’s eight teams will gather Saturday, Feb. 5 in Frederic for the Lakeland Conference championships.
Cornell Quad
The Wolfpack hosted a Lakeland Conference quad in Cornell Thursday, where the Luck Co-op went 3-0, Shell Lake was 2-1 and the Wolfpack and Unity tied 18-18 in the final round with the Eagles being declared the winner by tiebreaker criteria letter f, which states the team giving up the least number of forfeits is the winner.
In a 36-15 loss to Shell Lake, the Wolfpack won all three contested matches. At 145 pounds, Troy Duellman pinned Carter Allen in 54 seconds. That was followed by a thrilling 8-5 win for Person at 152 pounds over Brockton Naessen in an ultimate tiebreaker where Person finally got the decisive near fall. Fredrickson pinned Shell Lake’s Noah Lauterbach in 1:15 at 126 pounds.
Forfeits at 132, 138, 160, 170, 182 and 220 pounds gave the Lakers the win.
In a 48-9 loss to the Luck Co-op, Person was a 4-2 winner over Brandon Lucas, getting an early takedown and a late near falls and Fredrickson won by forfeit. A good 145-pound matchup between potential conference title contenders Duellman and the Luck Co-op’s Taedon Nichols went to Nichols in a pin in 1:39.
Unfortunately, according to Wolfpack coach Greg Sonnentag, Duellman was injured in that match, knocking him out of Saturday’s tournament at St. Croix Falls and leaving him questionable for the time being.
The Wolfpack forfeited at 160, 170, 182, 195, 220, 106 and 113 pounds.
In the Wolfpack’s loss to Unity, the Eagles gained all of their points by forfeit as Duellman defeated David Whitlock at 145 pounds with a pin in 2:33, Person defeated Jack Ross at 152 pounds with a pin in 1:09 and Fredrickson received a forfeit at 126.
Unity’s forfeit wins came at 160, 220 and 285 pounds.
