Duellman 4th, Person 9th at Ladysmith; both unbeaten in TL-C quad

WOLFPACK WRESTLING

As the only available wrestlers the Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe Wolfpack had this past week, Troy Duellman and Braeden Person both wrestled at 145 pounds during Saturday’s Ladysmith Invitational and brought home fourth- and ninth-place finishes.

Duellman went 2-2 and reached the semifinal round in the bracket. Now 24-8 for the year, the sophomore pinned Sander King of Black River Falls in 1:43 and Jesse Bruhn of Phillips in 3:14 to get there.

But second-seeded Blake Delsman of Reedsville, who came into the tournament undefeated, stayed that way for one more match by outscoring Duellman 7-1. Delsman fell to 18-1 when he was pinned by Abbotsford-Colby’s 27-1 Tanner Halopka in 2:40 in the final in a matchup of top-five state-ranked wrestlers.

Duellman lost a tough one, 4-2, to Alex Poirier (11-4) of Bloomer-Colfax in the third-place match.

Person (17-9) won two straight matches after dropping his opener by pin in 4:47 to Marathon’s Jacob Smith.

In the consolation bracket, the junior got a bye and then shut out Bruce’s Harold Garcia 7-0 and pinned Dalton Schmidt of Chequamegon in 1:53 in the ninth-place match.

The results gave the Wolfpack 36 team points, putting them five ahead of Elcho and in 18th place. Reedsville won the team title with 463 points, with Cameron (424), Cumberland (363), Phillips (301) and Ladysmith (290) rounding out the top five.

The Wolfpack is scheduled to host a Lakeland Conference quad tonight, Thursday, with the Luck Co-op, Shell Lake and Unity. The St. Croix Falls Invitational follows on Saturday. The team is at the Bruce Quad on Jan. 27.

Unbeaten at quad

Person and Duellman both went undefeated at Thursday’s Lakeland Conference quad hosted by Turtle Lake-Clayton at Turtle Lake High School.

The Wolfpack wrestlers met Unity in round one and forfeited five matches in a 30-9 loss.

However, Person used an early takedown to beat Connor Eichelt 2-1 at 152 pounds. Duellman took a 6-0 lead over David Whitlock in the 145-pound bout, but got reversed in the second period and had his lead cut to one before he got a takedown in the third period and pinned Whitlock at 5:23.

Bruce also used five forfeits to beat the Wolfpack 30-12 in round two. Duellman pinned Harold Garcia in 3:12 and Person stuck John Jacobs in 1:12.

The third-round dual between the Wolfpack and host Turtle Lake-Clayton featured only forfeits and had a final score of 36-12. Duellman and Person took their forfeits at 145 and 152 pounds, while Turtle Lake-Clayton got wins at 220, 285, 106, 126, 170 and 182 pounds.
