The Abbotsford/Colby wrestling co-op is back in the saddle, or perhaps it should be back on the mats, after eight members competed in the John Roberts Scramble in Antigo on Saturday.

Senior Carter Grewe and sophomore Tanner Halopka got off to a great start, dominating their competition en route to a pair of first place finishes to guide the co-op to tenth place with a score of 143.5.

Shiocton won the event with a team score of 316.5, followed by the co-op of Wabeno/Laona/Three Lakes with 266.5 and Cameron in third with 265.

Lucas Bauman competed in the 132 weight class, and after receiving a bye in his consolation bracket, went 0-2 in his matches, by pinfall to place 13th overall and garner eight points for the co-op.

Three wrestlers competed in the 152 weight class. Frankie Rodriguez went 2-2 on the day to finish 13th. Rodriguez picked up a victory over Nathan Miller of Menomonie Indian with a pinfall in 1:46 of the first period.

He followed this up with an injury default over Francis Dodge, also of Menomonie, but lost to teammate Jacob Hoppe in the consolation bracket via a pinfall late in the third period. Rodriguez lost his final match via pin to Cayden Gifford of Cameron.

Freshman Jacob Hoppe had a strong debut in the first tournament of his prep career, placing ninth in the 152 weight class. In addition to stopping Rodriguez, Hoppe went 4-1, with all four of his wins coming by way of pinfall.

Tanner Halopka’s 2021 campaign is off to a sensational start. The talented state qualifier from earlier this year exploded out of the gate in the 152 weight class.

up two victories through pins, and one by technical fall and the other by a 5-0 decision. Halopka earned 49.5 points towards the co-op’s team score.

Brayden Meyer placed 13th and earned eight points on Saturday in the 160 pound division. Meyer went 0-2 on the day. Both losses were the result of pins.

Senior Talon Severson recorded another top ten result for the Abby/Colby, taking tenth overall in the 170 weight class. Severson went 3-2 in his matches, picking up 19 points.

Two of Severson’s wins came through pins, with each pin taking less than two minutes. Severson’s third win was the result of a 13-6 decision over Laken Villaverede of Ashland in the consolation bracket.

Carter Grewe left no doubt in anyone’s mind who the top dog is in the 195 pound weight class. Grewe had an incredible stretch of wins over the spring that culminated in an appearance at the U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals in Fargo, where he squared off against the best wrestlers the nation has to offer.

Grewe used that experience to help him go 5-0 in Antigo, picking up 52 team points at the John Roberts Scramble on Saturday. Grewe won four of his matches by pinfalls, with three of his matches lasting under two minutes.

Grewe battled Gavon Ostermann of Rhinelander in the championship match, and his strength and technique carried him to a 4-0 decision.

Levi Dommer wrestled in the 285 pound division, and scored seven points for Abby/Colby, placing seventh. Dommer finished his day with a 2-3. Both wins came by way of pinfall.

The co-op will be back in action on Thursday, travelling to Amherst for a triangular. Matches begin at 6 p.m.
