Athens remains undefeated in eight man
The Athens varsity football team roughed up Gillett, 60-14, on the road Friday.
After Wausau Newman backed out of playing at Athens, the Bluejays traveled nearly two hours to play the Gillett Tigers for their homecoming game. It doesn’t seem to matter how far Athens needs to travel for its games this season because the results are always the same, with the Bluejays badly beating their opponents.
Athens improves to 4-0 in the Rogue eight-man conference and 9-0 overall this season. Athens plays at Thorp, 4-0 in the Rogue, at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 15, for the right to win the Rogue Conference championship this season.
The Bluejays led the Tigers, 54-0, after the third quarter on Friday, until Gillette scored 14 points in the fourth quarter. Athens senior Cooper Diedrich rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns, senior Caleb Borchardt rushed for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns and junior Kyler Ellenbecker rushed for 61 yards and a score. Junior tight end Aiden Janke caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Diedrich, who also had an interception on defense.
Red Raiders fall to Eagles
Marathon’s varsity football team lost to Auburndale, 23-8, on the road Friday to officially be eliminated from playoff contention this season.
The Red Raiders are now winless in the Marawood Conference and 1-7 overall in actual games played this season. Marathon will conclude its season with a non-conference game at 7 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 15, at Rosholt.
Auburndale led, 23-0, in the fourth quarter until Marathon scored its only points of the game on senior Nathan Hanke’s seven-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion run. Sophomore Tyler Underwood caught four passes from senior quarterback Ben Robbins for 53 yards, while senior Jaden Koeller added four catches for 40 yards from Robbins.
Senior linebacker Nick Sommers led the Red Raiders’ defense with 13 tackles, while linebacker Nathan Hanke added 11 and junior linebacker Hector Pintor had eight. Pintor paced Marathon’s defense with two quarterback sacks.
