RIB LAKE VOLLEYBALL

The second half of the volleyball season continued to be a struggle for the Rib Lake Lady Redmen, who fell flat on their Senior Night celebration Tuesday and were swept in three games by Prentice.

Rib Lake made a run in game one after falling behind by eight and came up short. Prentice dominated the last two sets to improve to finish 3-2 in the Marawood North and improve to 13-10 overall.

The Redmen dropped to 0-4 in the North and 5-18 overall with their eighth straight loss.

Serving hurt Rib Lake in Tuesday’s loss on both the offensive and defensive ends, according to head coach Heather Weik. The Redmen had 11 serving errors of their own and rough patches of serve receive made it hard to get any type of offensive rhythm going. Trailing 17-9 after a kill by Prentice’s Kali Heikkinen, a missed serve by Prentice started Rib Lake’s comeback effort. Emma Winter put down a kill and Danielle Mann served an ace. Kamryn Annala’s push found a hole and a Buccaneer error made it 18-14. Annala’s winner defl ected off a blocker and pulled the Redmen within 19-16, before a 4-0 run gave Prentice breathing room again at 23-16. Molly Heiser got a kill for Rib Lake, but it wasn’t enough in Prentice’s 25-18 win.

Heiser’s push found a spot in the deep corner to pull Rib Lake within 9-3 early in game two, but that was as close as the Redmen got. Winter’s push and Annala’s ace made it 16-8, but it was all Prentice after that in a 25-9 final.

Heiser’s ace gave Rib Lake the first point of game three, but soon it was 9-2. Aces by Mallory Burcaw and Leah Nehls and kills by Kyla Murphy and Heikkinen opened up a 21-7 lead before Emily Rodman’s attack ended the Bucs’ run for a moment. Josie Scheithauer got a block kill and Lauren Pelnis scored at the net before Prentice finished the sweep at 2511.

Scheithauer had two block kills in the match and Heiser had four assists.

On Saturday, Rib Lake didn’t get much going either at the Marawood Conference Crossover meet hosted by Edgar. The Redmen fell to Edgar 25-13, 25-11, Newman Catholic 25-11, 25-12 and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 25-15, 25-19.

Rib Lake will finish Marawood North play tonight, Thursday, at Chequamegon. The team returns to Edgar this Saturday for the six-team Edgar Invitational and then heads to Marathon Tuesday for another Marawood crossover event, which gets started at 4 p.m. and will conclude the regular season.
