With Edgar’s varsity football team holding onto a precarious 6-0 lead against Auburndale, senior slot receiver Everet Brehm decided he wasn’t going to let the Eagles spoil the Wildcats’

homecoming on Saturday.

Brehm busted off a 55-yard punt return in front of Edgar’s sideline with just over three minutes left in the third quarter, to help set up his nineyard touchdown scamper to give the Wildcats a 12-0 lead. Brehm also sealed the homecoming victory for Edgar when he rushed for a 12-yard touchdown and two-point conversion with just over four minutes remaining in the game, to give the Wildcats a 20-6 win.

“Our running backs are a little dinged up so I had to step up and make big plays, and our offensive line blocked great for me,” said Everet, who is the son of Doug and Barb Brehm. “It feels amazing to win our homecoming game.”

Edgar’s defense intercepted Auburndale junior quarterback Trayton Weber three times during the game. Senior Ashton Schuett and sophomore Teegan Streit had interceptions in the second quarter, while sophomore Karter Butt’s interception in the fourth quarter helped set up Everet Brehm’s rushing touchdown to seal the victory.

“We just fought hard the whole game; our defensive backs played great coverage and our linebackers tackled like they should,” Ashton Schuett said.

Karter Butt rushed for a 13-yard touchdown in the first quarter, but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful when starting quarterback Teegan Streit’s pass fell incomplete to sophomore tight end Brett Baumgartner.

Auburndale nearly tied the game in the first quarter when senior Ter- rance Cottrell-Roberson got loose for a 65-yard touchdown run, but it didn’t count because the Eagles were flagged for holding on the play. The Eagles were forced the punt the ball on this particular offensive possession, when Wildcats junior defensive tackle Brady Stencil’s pressure caused Weber to throw an errant pass.

Edgar head coach Jerry Sinz complemented Teegan Streit on his great command of the offense against Auburndale. Streit started his first varsity game at quarterback in place of senior Mattison Butt, who was suspended this game after getting ejected from Edgar’s overtime loss against Hurley the previous week.

“Obviously he (Teegan Streit) had to start on defense too because he backed up Mattison at both quarterback and defensive back, so of course he, too, was tired,” Sinz said. “Teegan had a million things to think about because he was our strong safety and quarterback. If he’d only had to play either defensive back or quarterback, then things would’ve probably been easier for him, but he held up as well as could be expected. He did fine and I am proud of him. He did a good job for being a little sophomore.”

Edgar improved its record to 2-1 in the Marawood Conference and 4-3 overall this season, while Auburndale fell to 1-1 in the Marawood and 4-2 overall. Edgar travels to play Abbotsford this Friday, Oct. 8. Abbotsford didn’t play a game on Friday when its opponent, Oconto, canceled because it had players with COVID-19.

Everet Brehm said Edgar’s goal remains the same, despite the Wildcats already having three losses this season.

“Our plan is still to make it to state and win state,” he said.
