Cancer Awareness Night Sept. 21 at Raider Hall
The Medford volleyball team is hosting a Cancer Awareness Night on Tuesday, Sept. 21 when the Raiders host the Rhinelander Hodags in Great Northern Conference play. The Raiders also will celebrate Parents Night.
Plans for the evening include basket raffles with prizes donated by varsity parents and local businesses and a “miracle minute” that will take place between games one and two. Donations for basket raffles are still being accepted. Call Karla Klapatauskas at 715-965-0234 if interested.
JV action at Raider Hall starts at 5:30 p.m. with varsity to follow at about 7 p.m. Tickets for the basket raffles will go on sale starting at 5 p.m. prior to the JV match.
Funds raised during the miracle minute will be matched by Dairyland Century 21 Realty of Medford.
The team plans to raise funds that will be split for two causes.
One hits close to home for the family of Raider junior Martha Miller. Her 20-year-old brother Jobe, a 2019 graduate of Medford Area Senior High, was diagnosed with advanced Hodgkins lymphoma one year ago, which led to intense chemotherapy treatments over the fall and winter, but he is now back in school at UW-Stout and considered cancer free. The Miller family (Dan, DeAnna, Jobe, Abe and Martha) would like to help the family of “Malcom” of Wisconsin Rapids, a child the Millers got to know who has been fighting an intense battle with cancer since late 2018.
“What we have learned is that people have been so helpful and giving to us, it feels right to give to another family in need,” DeAnna Miller said.
The team will donate the other half to a breast cancer cause still to be determined.
Medford’s JV2 and JV3 teams will also play matches at Medford Area Elementary School at 5 and 6 p.m. prior to the varsity match.
