Tallier lowers 200-meter record; Franzen also wins 200 dash

Gracie Tallier capped a big night by lowering her school record in the 200-meter dash during Gilman’s seventh-place finish in the girls’ side of Tuesday’s Altoona Track and Field Invitational.
Tallier won the 200- and 100-meter dashes, took second with a lowered time in the 400-meter dash and placed fourth in the long jump to account for 33 of Gilman’s 46 points in the 10-team meet. The Pirates outscored Boyceville (44.5), Greenwood (10) and Osseo-Fairchild (10).
Tallier’s winning time in the 200-meter dash was 26.95 seconds, 0.03 seconds faster than the school-record 26.98 seconds she was timed at during the seasonopening Medford Early Bird Invite. The sophomore won the race by 0.05 seconds over Durand’s Kendall Hagness.
Earlier in the meet, Tallier won the 100-meter dash in 13.17 seconds, 0.27 seconds ahead of Hagness and 0.45 seconds ahead of Mauston’s Brie Eckerman.
Hagness did win the 400-meter dash in 1:01.96, while Tallier was the runner-up in 1:02.11 in her second open 400 of the spring. She lowered her time by 1.67 seconds from her May 14 effort at Cadott. Pirate Ava Gunderson was right at her season- best time with a ninth-place mark of 1:06.98 and Sophia Drier was 12th 1:10.91.
Freshman Bailey Angell accounted for 13 points with a second-place finish in the shot put and a fourth-place throw in the discus. Her toss of 34 feet, 0.5 inches in the shot put was a new personal record for the season. She was 18.5 inches ahead of third-place finisher Amie West of Cumberland. Matti Wafle of Mauston won at 36-2. Pirate Brooke Fryza was 12th at 25-4 and Emma Grunseth was 13th at 25-1.5.
In the discus, Angell hit 93-4 to finish behind Wafle (102-11), Colby’s Malayna Rieck (95-7) and Fall Creek’s JaneyAnne Grossinger (94-7). Grunseth’s personalbest throw of 73-11 was good for ninth.
Tallier’s leap of 14-8.5 in the long jump put her behind Olivia Shalley of Altoona (16-3.5), Emma Stokes of Cumberland (15- 5) and Andie Otto of Cumberland (14 10). Colby won the girls championship with 138 points, 17 more than Fall Creek. Altoona was a distant third with with 85 points, followed by Mauston (74), Cumberland (71.5) and Durand (70).
Gilman’s boys placed eighth with 34 points, highlighted by Dominic Franzen’s victory in the 200-meter dash. The junior sprinted to his second-best time of the season at 24.11 seconds and beat Cumberland’s Drew Griffith by 0.31 seconds and Mauston’s Garron Brandt by 0.47 seconds. Franzen added a fourthplace time of 11.9 seconds in the 100-meter dash, a tenth off his season-best time set May 4 in Gilman.
Gilman’s 800-meter relay team lowered its time by 1.83 seconds to 1:39.27. Franzen, Andrew Hecker, Branden Ustianowski and Troy Duellman finished seconds behind Cumberland (1:36.32) and ahead of Fall Creek (1:41.32).
Hecker added points in three events. He tied his personal-best of 5-8 and took fourth in the high jump. He was one of four jumpers to hit 5-8. Winner Nick Kasper of Cumberland cleared 6 feet. Ustianowski was ninth at a personal-best 5-4. Hecker took fifth in the long jump at 17-8.5 and he was seventh in the 400-meter dash, tying his best time of 57.05 seconds.
In field results, Zack Marion was 11th in the shot put with a toss of 32-10.5, while Bryce Chovan (29-7.75) and Caleb Marion (29-7.25) were 16th and 17th. Caleb Marion’s throw was a season-best. Chovan was 12th in the discus at 89-10 and Caleb Marion was 18th (72-6). Ustianowski was 12th at 16-8.75 in the long jump, and Adam Draeger was 15th in the triple jump at 276.75.
Quintin Franzen (13.28) and Braeden Person (13.5) were 16th and 17th in the 100-meter dash. Person (1:02.53) was 19th in the 400. Duellman (26.77) and Quintin Franzen (27.73) were 16th and 18th in the 200-meter dash.
Cumberland won the meet with 152 points, followed by Fall Creek (130), Mauston (93), Colby (82.5), Durand (74), Altoona (67) and Greenwood (44). Osseo- Fairchild and Boyceville were ninth and 10th with 5.5 and four points.
Gilman will finish the regular season Tuesday at the Eastern Cloverbelt Conference championships, which will be held in Colby starting at 4 p.m.
