Abby/Colby snaps losing skid Abby/Colby snaps losing skid

The Abbotsford/Colby softball co-op got back to winning ways on Tuesday, May 25, snapping an eight game losing streak with a 9-1 victory over the Spencer Rockets in Colby.

The co-op could not recapture the same form, dropping a double-header at home to the Greenwood/Loyal co-op on Tuesday, June 1.

9-1

There’s no feeling quite like victory, and if you were to ask the Abby/Colby softball co-op’s players, they’d certainly agree. The co-op has been competitive through an eight game losing skid, but a cold offense has failed to put pressure on opposing team’s defenses.

The co-op flipped the script on Tuesday, in a rain shortened rematch with the Spencer Rockets on May 25.

The co-op had defeated the Rockets in their previous meeting back on May 5, rattling the Rockets on the road with a 15-4 start before the Rockets rallied back.

Abby/Colby eventually took that game 15-11, but the co-op took that comeback to heart, and gave the Rockets little breathing room in their second meeting with their Cloverbelt Conference rivals.

Kylie Orth got things started, scoring one run at the bottom of the first. Two runs from Josie Higley and Paige Klement followed in the second.

The Rockets scored once in the second, but from there the co-op closed the door shut. Abby/Colby would hold Spencer scoreless through the final four innings.

The Rockets held Abby/Colby scoreless in the third, but the co-op came firing back in the fourth and fifth, dropping three runs apiece on Spencer.

The co-op finished with nine hits, as Alea Graff and Kylie Orth led the way with two hits apiece, both singles. Catie Clement, Emma Peavey, Higley, Kya Viegut and Paige Klement all added one hit each, all singles.

Greenwood, 12-0

It would be a week before the co-op would be back on the field, with rainy and cold weather forcing the co-op to postpone their home game with Gilman last week Thursday.

There was definitely some rust on their game when the Abby/Colby softball coop returned to action on Tuesday night, battling it out with one of the best teams in the Cloverbelt in Greenwood/Loyal in a home double-header.

The co-op made good contact at bat, but failed to find the gaps with their shots, or generate runs in a 12-0 loss in the first game. Abby/Colby finished with six hits against their rivals. Emma Oelrich and Emma Peavey led the way, recording two hits apiece, both singles.

Catie Clement and Brooklyn Filtzkowski added two more singles, but the co-op left five runners stranded on base.

19-9

With one game now under their belts, the co-op was much better on offense in their second game of a double-header with Greenwood/Loyal on June 1.

Unfortunately, their defense could not match their offense as Abby/Colby gave up 19 runs after taking a promising 6-3 lead after two innings.

Both teams picked up one run in the first inning, but it was Abby/Colby that did the scoring in the second, with the coop tacking on five runs.

But the co-op’s offense sputtered and stoped in the third and fourth, going scoreless in each. Greenwood/Loyal came storming back in those innings, scoring a combined nine runs to regain momentum and the victory.

Abby/Colby finished with eight hits, including three singles from Emma Oelirch. Kylie Orth had two doubles. Alea Graff and Brooklyn Filtzkowski each picked up one single.
