WIAA names locations and venues of three spring state tournaments
The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association has identified the state tournament event locations, venues and schedules for boys golf, baseball and softball this spring.
The locations, venues and schedules for the boys golf, baseball and softball state tournaments have been altered from some of their traditional formats and locations in continued accommodations to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
The WIAA boys golf state championships will be held at two courses in Wisconsin Dells Monday and Tuesday, June 14-15. Divisions 2 and 3 will play at Trappers Turn Golf Club, while Division 1 will play at Wild Rock Golf Club. Tee times start at 7 a.m. both days on both courses.
Medford competes in Division 2 and will play at the nine-team Northwestern regional on June 1 and, if individuals or the team advance, at the Black River Falls sectional on June 8.
The WIAA baseball state championships will remain at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, with the exception of the Division 1 quarterfinals, which will be held Friday, June 25 at Herr-Baker Stadium at Marian University in Fond du Lac.
In Divisions 4, 3 and 2, semifinals will be played at 11:05 a.m. at Fox Cities Stadium with championships at 6:05 p.m.
Division 4 games will be played on Monday, June 28, Division 3 games will be played on Tuesday, June 29 and Division 2 games will be played on Wednesday, June 30. Division 1 semifinals and finals will be played Thursday, July 1.
Brackets have changed for the three local baseball teams.
Medford’s Division 2 regional bracket loses Antigo and Rhinelander, who move to the Wrightstown sectional. The sixteam regional bracket now features Abbotsford- Colby, Altoona, Bloomer, Merrill and Mosinee. Rice Lake is still the sectional host on June 22.
Rib Lake’s Division 4 regional bracket now includes Athens, Butternut-Mercer, Edgar, Newman Catholic, Northland-Wisconsin Valley Lutheran and Prentice. Athens remains the sectional host on June 22.
Thorp-Gilman has been bumped up to Division 3 and placed in a six-team regional that includes Cadott, Fall Creek, Osseo-Fairchild, Stanley-Boyd and Whitehall. Cumberland hosts the sectional on June 22.
The WIAA state softball championships will move to the Green Bay area June 28-30. Semifinals and finals for all five divisions will be held at UW-Green Bay’s King Park. Bay Port High School will host the Division 1 quarterfinals.
Division 5 semifinals will be played at 9 and 11 a.m. on Monday, June 28 with the championship at 4 p.m. Division 2 semifinals will be played at 10 a.m. and noon on Wednesday, June 30 with the championship at 6 p.m., following the Division 1 title game.
In Division 2, Medford will start in a half-sectional grouping that includes Antigo, Ashland, Colby-Abbotsford, Hayward, Lakeland, Merrill, Mosinee, Rhinelander and Rice Lake. Mosinee hosts the sectional final June 23.
In Division 5, Gilman starts in a halfsectional grouping that includes Bruce, Clear Lake, Flambeau, McDonell Central, Owen-Withee, Prairie Farm and Thorp. Rib Lake starts in a grouping that includes Athens, Bayfield, Butternut-Mercer, Drummond, Hurley, Mellen and Prentice. Athens hosts the sectional final June 23.
Since 1994, the state boys golf championships have been held at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison prior to the cancellation of the spring season in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The state softball tournament has been held at Goodman Diamond in Madison since 2002. Fox Cities Stadium has been the home of the state baseball tournament since 1998.

James singled for her third hit of the game, but she was eliminated on a fielder’s choice by Hendricks. Columbus threw the ball on a grounder by Weir. Vick’s single and Angell’s groundout drove in the runs.
Duellman also went three for four as Casperson allowed 11 hits while taking the loss.
