Plenty of improvement from meet one to meet two for Rib Lake athletes

Meet number two of the 2021 season produced several improved results for the Rib Lake track and field squads Thursday in Phillips, where the girls placed third and the boys took fourth in the team standings.
The boys placed well in just about every area while scoring 82 points and beating Drummond (56), Prentice (46) and Butternut (14) in the team standings. Ladysmith outscored Hurley 106-94 to win the meet, while the host Loggers were third with 86 points.
The Redmen scored 28 of their points in relay races, building upon their solid start May 3 in Stratford.
The sprint relay team of Ashton Keiser, Donovan Sutherland, Ethan Keiser and Dominick Classen won both of its races Thursday. They started with an easy win in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:42.31 that beat Hurley (1:49) and Phillips (2:04.91). In the 400-meter relay, they finished in 49.37 seconds to beat Drummond (51.47), Hurley (54.64) and Phillips (59.78).
To close out the meet, the 1,600-meter team of Ryan Buehler, Ben Petersen, Sutherland and Classen finished in 4:04.12, good for second behind Phillips (4:01.75). Hurley was a distant third at 4:31.38.
With 20 points, the long jump was another big event for Rib Lake. Ashton Keiser won it with a jump of 18 feet, 11.5 inches that was 13.5 inches better than the first meet. He beat Fritz Zimmermann of Drummond by 6 inches. Classen was third at 18-0.5, an improvement of 3.5 inches, and Theo Robisch was fourth at 16-9, a foot better than the first meet. Sutherland was seventh and missed scoring by one place. He improved by 8 inches with a leap of 15-6.
Ashton Keiser’s big night included a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash. He was 0.05 seconds behind Ladysmith’s Bishop Peterson at 11.92 seconds, a 0.62-second improvement. Ethan Keiser got the sixth-place point at 12.82 seconds and Damien Peterson was seventh at 13.1 seconds. Both shaved time from the Stratford meet. Peterson added a sixth-place time of 28.03 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
Robisch improved by more than a foot and a half while taking second in the triple jump with a leap of 32-6.75. Damien Peterson was fourth at 29-8.25 and Xavier Johnson got the sixth-place point at 27-4. Hurley’s Eli Talsma won at 37-9.
Bud Schreiner placed fourth in both throws. In the shot put, he hit 32 feet, an improvement of 26 inches. He went an inch further in the discus at 89-8. Brandon Heiser was eighth in the discus (6910) and ninth in the shot put (26-8), improved distances in both events.
Ryan Buehler was fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:36.92 and eighth in the 400-meter dash at 1:00.3. Petersen got the sixth-place point in the 400 at 59.36 seconds, cutting 2.05 seconds from the first meet.
Girls highlights
The girls got a win in the 400-meter relay, second in the 1,600-meter relay and solid individual showings by Jolee Gehrke and Kylee Goodrich while scoring 67 points to beat Hurley (54), Drummond (48) and Prentice (25.33). Ladysmith easily won the meet with 203 points, while Phillips (108.66) was the runner-up.
The 400-meter team of Megan Yanko, Olivia Lopez, Ryanna Schrader and Amber Yanko sprinted to its win in 58.22 seconds, beating Phillips by 1.55 seconds. Ladysmith (59.98) was third. The 1,600-meter team of Megan Yanko, Lauren Pelnis, Goodrich and Nadia Czahor finished in 5:30, well behind the top team from Phillips (4:40).
Gehrke cut 0.65 seconds and placed second in the 300-meter low hurdles with her time of 54.12 seconds. Ladysmith’s Kylee Becker won that race in 49.56 seconds. The Rib Lake senior took third in the high jump by clearing 4-6, fifth in the triple jump at 26-8.75 and eighth in the long jump at 12-9. Lopez, a freshman, was right behind Gehrke in the triple jump at 25-11.5, 11th in the long jump at 11-11 and earned third place in the 100-meter high hurdles at 20.83 seconds. Becker won that race too in 16.35 seconds.
Goodrich was third in both of her distance runs. She finished the 800-meter run in 2:53.36, while Czahor was sixth in 3:07.24. Goodrich ran the 1,600-meter race in 6:24.84.
Pelnis led the shot put crew with a throw of 26-8 that put her in fourth place. Hannah Schuh got the sixth-place point at 25-10, a 5-inch improvement, and Emma Winterwas eighth at 24-8.5. Schuh took third in the discus at 68 feet, while Winter was 10th at 59 feet. Drummond’s Nora Skoraczewski won both with throws of 31-3.5 and 83-10.
Pelnis and Yanko were fifth and sixth in the 400-meter dash with times of 1:13.58 and 1:14.06. Pelnis added a seventh-place time of 32.35 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Haylee Scotty got the sixth-place point in the 100-meter dash at 15.31 seconds, improving by 0.96 seconds, and she was 10th in the 200-meter dash at 34.51 seconds.
