Pirates, Redmen post solid showings Monday at Edgar meet
The Gilman Pirates and Rib Lake Redmen had solid showings Monday against a mix of Marawood and Cloverbelt schools at the Dr. H.A. Schulz Invitational hosted by Edgar.
The host Wildcats were the dominant program in Monday’s meet, easily winning both of the team championships.
The Taylor County schools scored well in the girls meet as things were relatively tight from second through sixth place. Gilman took third with 88 points, six behind runner-up Stratford. Flambeau, representing the Lakeland Conference, won a close battle for fourth with 67 points, just ahead of Newman Catholic (65) and Rib Lake (60). Granton (32) finished seventh.
Gilman again got strong efforts from Gracie Tallier and Bailey Angell as well as solid scoring in the middle distances. Rib Lake got two second-place finishes from senior Jolee Gehrke, one from junior Kylee Goodrich and a win from its weight throwers’ 400-meter relay team.
Angell, a freshman, extended her personal- best distance to 96 feet, 1 inch to easily win the discus competition, while her teammate, Brooke Fryza took fourth at 75-8 and Rib Lake’s Hannah Schuh got the eighth-place point at 65-11, just 4 inches ahead of Gilman’s Emma Grunseth. Angell came up third in the shot put at 30-4, one spot ahead of Rib Lake’s Lauren Pelnis, who improved by over two feet at 29-2.5. Grunseth was sixth at a personal-best 28-0.5. Schuh was eighth at 25-11.5, just ahead of Fryza (25-6.5) and Gilman’s Kaylee O’Malley (25-2).
Rib Lake’s throwers showed off their speed in their special 400-meter relay. Emma Winter, Schuh, Ryanna Schrader and Pelnis finished in 1:03.75, 2.24 seconds ahead of Newman Catholic. Gilman’s team of Angell, Grunseth, O’Malley and Fryza was fourth in 1:07.82, 1.1 seconds behind Stratford.
In the meet’s main relays, Gilman’s Sophia Drier, Ava Gunderson, Tallier and Aubrey Syryczuk was the top finishing team, taking second in the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 4:31.16 that beat Stratford (4:50.98) and trailed Edgar (4:19.38). Gehrke, Olivia Lopez, Haylee Scotty and Pelnis were third for Rib Lake in the 800-meter race at 2:07.92 behind Edgar (2:00.59) and Newman (2:03.48). Schrader, Megan Yanko, Lopez and Pelnis were third in the 400-meter race at 59.23 seconds, just ahead of Newman (1:00.25) and behind Edgar (55.86) and Stratford (59.13).
Tallier placed second in the 100- and 200-meter dashes behind Edgar’s Morgan Schnelle. Her 100 time was 13.15 seconds, just 0.03 seconds behind Schnelle. Lopez took fourth for Rib Lake in 14.57 seconds and Yanko was sixth in 14.72 seconds. Both ran the 100 for the first time this spring. Scotty was 11th (15.57). Tallier finished the 200 in 27.63 seconds, 0.64 seconds behind Schnelle. Yanko’s first open 200 resulted in a seventh-place time of 31.17 seconds.
Tallier tacked on a third-place distance of 14-2.25 in the long jump, which Schnelle also won at 15-0.5. Lopez was eighth at a season-best 12-7.5.
Gilman’s Syryczuk earned a pair of seconds, including one with her time of 1:06.53 in the 400-meter dash that put her 1.22 seconds and one spot ahead of Gunderson. Rib Lake’s Nadia Czahor was eighth at 1:18.33 in a race won by Flambeau’s Kristen Lawton (1:04.5). Syryczuk went 30-5.5 in the triple jump to only trail Stratford’s Jaidyn Wright (33- 2.75). Gehrke was ninth at 25-10.
Gehrke cleared the bar at 4-8 to take second in the high jump, 2 inches behind Flambeau’s Ari Brost. Gunderson was fifth for Gilman at 4-2. Gehrke also continued to improve in the 300-meter low hurdles, taking second in 54.08 seconds behind Edgar’s Rachel Brewster (50.33).
Rib Lake’s Kylee Goodrich was the runner-up in the 1,600-meter run at a season-best 6:24.18, one second behind Stratford’s Kressa Wenzel. Gilman’s Abby Krug was sixth, chopping over 20 seconds from Friday’s meet in Stanley with a time of 7:00.45. Drier was fourth in the 800-meter run at 2:51.06, Goodrich was fifth in 2:52.76, Czahor took eighth in 3:08.26 and Krug was ninth at 3:09.46.
Boys results
Edgar was the runaway winner in the boys meet with 202 points, beating Newman (132), Stratford (122), Gilman (62.5), Rib Lake (32.5) and Flambeau (25).
Gilman junior Dominic Franzen continued his strong spring with secondplace runs in the 100- and 200-meter dashes behind Edgar’s Kyle Brewster. Franzen ran the 100 in 12.0 seconds to fall 0.44 seconds behind Brewster. Rib Lake senior Ashton Keiser took fourth in 12.25 seconds, while Ethan Keiser was ninth in 13.07 seconds and Gilman’s Quintin Franzen made the top 10 at 13.3 seconds.
Dominic Franzen’s 200 time was 24.34 seconds, 0.38 seconds behind Brewster. Gilman’s Troy Duellman got the eighthplace point in 27.03 seconds, just ahead of Rib Lake’s Ben Petersen (27.11) and Quintin Franzen (27.4).
Gilman’s Andrew Hecker had a solid night in the jumps. He was second in the high jump, tying his season-best of 5-8. That put him two inches behind Newman’s Charlie McCarty. Pirate Branden Ustianowski set a personal-best by clearing 5 feet, good for fifth. Hecker was third in the long jump at 18-5 and he was fifth in his first triple jump competition of the year at 36-6, while Dominic Franzen was seventh at a personal-best 35-1. Rib Lake’s Theo Robisch (31-7) and Damien Peterson (29-3.25) were eight and ninth. Gilman’s Adam Draeger (25-10.5) was 11th.
Ashton Keiser was seventh in the long jump at 17-5.5, while Ustianowski and Rib Lake’s Dominick Classen tied for eighth at 16-9.5.
Duellman cleared 7-6 and Quintin Franzen hit 6 feet for second- and thirdplace finishes in the pole vault. Hecker added a fourth-place time of 57.34 seconds in the 400-meter dash, a season-best. Ben Petersen was sixth for Rib Lake in 1:00.59.
Rib Lake earned a good chunk of its points with third-place finishes in three relays. Ashton Keiser, Donovan Sutherland, Ethan Keiser and Classen ran the 400-meter race in 50.67 seconds to trail Edgar (44.13) and Stratford (47.37). They beat fourth-place Newman by 4.5 seconds. Those same four runners ran the 800-meter race in 1:42.49 to beat Newman by 12.93 seconds. Edgar won in 1:33.58, 7.85 seconds ahead of Stratford. Sutherland, Ryan Buehler, Ben Petersen and Classen ran the 1,600-meter relay in 4:10.21 to trail Edgar (3:36.89) and Stratford (3:42.6).
Also on the track, Buehler was sixth for Rib Lake in the 1,600-meter run at 5:49.91. Gilman’s Zack Marion was seventh in the discus at a season-best 88-5 and he was 11th in the shot put at 32-10. Rib Lake’s Bud Schreiner led locals in the shot put with a ninth-place toss of 346, easily his best of the spring.
Rib Lake will host its annual Northwoods Quad with Chequamegon, Phillips and Prentice on Friday afternoon starting at 4:30 p.m. Gilman is in Cadott Friday for a 4 p.m. meet.
