Angell, Tallier win twice at Stanley-Boyd; Hecker, Franzen lead the boys

GILMAN TRACK & FIELD

Gracie Tallier and Bailey Angell continued their early-season success and Aubrey Syryczuk got her first triple jump win during the Gilman girls’ fifthplace finish at Friday’s Stanley-Boyd Oriole Invitational.

Angell, a freshman, swept the shot put and discus titles for the second straight meet while Tallier, a sophomore, won the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the second straight outing.

The Pirates scored 88 points to beat Durand (76) and Cadott (59). It was tight at the top as the host Orioles were a halfpoint better than Fall Creek 110-109.5 and Abbotsford (101.5) wasn’t far behind. Mc-Donell Central scored 95 points to place fourth.

The Gilman boys were sixth out of eight scoring teams with 62 points, beating Abbotsford (46) and Thorp (1). Fall Creek dominated with 177 points, followed by Stanley-Boyd (129.5), Cadott (94.5), McDonell (82.5) and Durand (80.5). Andrew Hecker led the Pirates with two second-place finishes.

Girls recap

Tallier, who became the school’s record holder in the sprints in the season opener at Medford, didn’t quite reach those speeds on Friday, but she was fast enough to beat Durand’s Kendall Hagness in a pair of close races. Tallier’s 100-meter time was 13.29 seconds, 0.21 seconds ahead of Hagness, and her 200-meter time of 27.59 seconds put her 0.09 seconds ahead of Hagness. Tallier came up just short of a third win, going 14 feet, 7.5 inches in the long jump, 1.5 inches behind Stanley-Boyd’s Jade Fredrickson.

Angell set a new personal-best with a toss of 31 feet even in the shot put. That gave her a winning margin of more than two feet over Durand senior McKenna Hurlburt. Brooke Fryza added a fifthplace and season-best throw of 26-11.5 for Gilman and Kaylee O’Malley was seventh at a season best 25-6.5. Angell’s throw of 90-1 won the discus competition by 7 feet over Hurlburt. Fryza added an eighthplace point at 73-2.

In her first meet of 2021, Syryczuk, a junior, had the best triple jump out of five competitors, going 31-4.5, 22 inches ahead of Abbotsford’s Sydney Falteisek. Syryczuk added a fourth-place time of 1:07.46 in the 400-meter dash, just ahead of teammate Ava Gunderson (1:08.09).

Sophia Drier was third in the 800-meter run in a season-best 2:47.38, while Abby Krug was 10th at 3:22.13. Krug was ninth in the 1,600-meter run, improving by 8.63 seconds from her previous meet to 7:21.03.

Gilman made its 1,600-meter relay debut for 2021 at the end of the meet. Drier, Tallier, Syryczuk and Gunderson finished second in 4:31.44, 5.82 seconds behind Fall Creek and 1.61 seconds ahead of third-place Cadott.
