NASP STATE ARCHERY

An unusual season of virtual archery meets in the state ended with Gilman’s Kylee Burton and Medford’s Landen Viergutz claiming the individual championships in the 2021 Wisconsin National Archery in the Schools Program’s state bullseye tournament.

Burton, a senior, posted the best score in the entire state with a 293 out of a possible 300, while Viergutz, a sophomore, shot a 291 to top a field of 462 boys statewide. There were 422 girls registered for the tournament, creating a total field of 884 archers.

Burton’s championship was just one of the highlights for the Gilman Pirate Archery Club. Tatum Weir placed fifth among high school girls with a 285, Casey Grunseth was fifth among high school boys with a 286, Kennedy Buske was second among elementary girls with a score of 262 and Reece Weir was third in the elementary girls division with a 257.

The Pirates placed second out of 13 scoring teams in the high school division. This was achieved with just five of the 12 scoring archers being high school students. The rest were middle schoolers. The Pirates scored 3,254 points to finish behind champion Cadott (3,393) and ahead of top-five teams from West De Pere (3,230), Sparta (3,211) and Marshfi eld (3,185).

Gilman also took second out of four elementary division teams with 2,779 points. Auburndale won the team title with 2,847 points. Purdy Elementary School of Fort Atkinson (2,454) and Spring Hill Elementary School of Wisconsin Dells (2,445) were third and fourth.

The Medford Archery Club added a third-place finish by sophomore Kirsten Weix in the high school girls division. She had a score of 287. Fifth grader Jake Erl was fourth out of 72 elementary boys with his score of 267.

Medford placed ninth out of 16 scoring teams in the middle school division with 3,018 points. St. Patrick’s Catholic School of Sparta won the championship with 3,282 points, 59 better than Stratford and 75 better than Cadott.

Burton’s 293 included 10-point shots on 24 of her 30 attempts. She was six points ahead of the next-best female, Cadott sophomore LaRhea Christenson, who won the tiebreaker over Weix by connecting on 19 10-point shots, compared to Weix’s 18. There were 166 girls in the high school division.

Viergutz hit 21 10-point shots in his round of 30 attempts and edged out Portage Middle School eighth grader Robert Warren by one point to earn the boys overall championship. He also had a onepoint margin over Elk Mound’s Mitchell Ruppert for the high school division title. Cadott’s Tad Weiss was third among high school boys with a 289 and freshman Simion Ringel of Wisconsin Dells was fourth at 289, beating Grunseth, a sophomore, by three points.

Buske’s 262 tied Devin Leis of St. Patrick’s for the top elementary girls spot. Leis had an 11-10 edge in 10-point shots. Reece Weir hit the 10-spot five times and outscored Evelyn Raduechel of Stettin Elementary by one point for third place.

The top 25 overall male and female high school archers in state competition qualified for the state scholarship shoot, set for Saturday in Weston at the Premier Sports Academy.
