Chieftains win over Bruce, lose close one to Webster
A couple heart-stopping games were played by the Lake Holcombe boys basketball squad over the week, resulting in split results.
Feb. 2 vs. Bruce conference (W 68-60)
It was off the short distance to Bruce, for a match-up that was close throughout. By halftime, the score was tied, 33-33, but the Chieftains pulled ahead to edge the Raiders, 68-60.
The win helps put Lake Holcombe closer to the title of East Lakeland Conference champions, with a couple more games to go in the regular season.
Leading on the night, were seniors Kaden Crank and Riley Gingras, who each ended with 14 points. Gingras hit three shots from beyond the arc, while Crank knocked down one. Junior Dylan Bowen also hit a three, finishing with 13 points.
Seniors Brock Flater and Tate Sauerwein came next, with 9 points each, followed by junior Colton Minnick, with 7. Sophomore Brendan Anders rounded out the scoring, with 2 points.
Feb. 8 vs. Webster non-conference (L 56-54)
Lake Holcombe then took on Webster, hosting the nonconference battle – and a battle it was, right down to the last.
The Tigers dominated on the scoreboard in the first half, leading 29-12 at the break. The Chieftains shook themselves off and played the kind of ball they’re used to, coming back in the second half to score 42 points to Websters’ 27.
It was a close contest, but the Tigers barely squeaked by the Chieftains, for a 56-54 victory.
Crank again led the team, with 18, while Flater was only a few points behind, with 15. Gingras ended his night with 9, and Bowen and Minnick each added 6.
Lake Holcombe now sits at 11-8 overall and 8-2 in the league.
