The Edgar boys basketball team won two straight road games to lock up the Marawood South Conference championship.
Edgar beat Phillips, 55-41, on Thursday to gain at least a share of the conference title and then Edgar downed archival Marathon, 49-39, on Monday to win the outright Marawood South championship.
Senior Kyle Brewster led the Wildcats with 24 points against the Loggers, while senior Drew Guden added 13. Guden paced the team with 19 points against the Red Raiders and senior Brayden Baumgartner had 14.
Wildcats head coach Dave Huss is elated his squad won the Marawood South this season.
“I am extremely proud of the kids and coaches for all their efforts thus far this season that has allowed us to capture a conference championship,” Huss said. “This a very difficult accomplishment considering the quality of teams in our conference. One of the goals we set as a team at the start of the season was to win the conference championship and the players worked very hard to obtain this goal. Hopefully we can use this momentum heading into the tournament.”
Drew Guden should only need 12 more points to achieve the 1,000 career points milestone, which he’ll likely obtain during the team’s away game this Thursday, Feb. 11, against Wisconsin Rapids Assumption. Edgar concludes its regular season with a non-conference home game against Hurley this Saturday, Feb. 13.
Edgar now has a 17-2 overall record and is 13-1 in the Marawood South Conference with a two-game lead over Auburndale. Edgar was awarded a No. 1 seed in its WIAA Division 4 regional and it’ll play a home regional semifinal on Friday, Feb. 19, against the winner of this Tuesday’s regional quarterfi nal between No. 4 Abbotsford against No. 4 Spencer.
The Stratford girls basketball team won its game at Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 54-33, on Monday to capture a share of the Marawood South Conference championship with Auburndale this season.
Tigers head coach Tammie Christopherson is happy her team won the conference title.
“This was an awesome team accomplishment,” she said. “The girls have worked incredibly hard this season to reach their goal of being conference champions, and I am so proud of them. It has been 20 years since the last one.”
SeniorBreannaAckleyscored a career high 35 points to reach the coveted 1,000 career points milestone during Stratford’s 75-63 road win against Lakeland Union on Saturday.
“She is an incredible athlete and young lady,” coach Christopherson said about Ackley.
