All three of the Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe wrestlers won a match and two of them advanced to sectional competition during Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 Phillips regional, which was actually held in Cornell.

Junior Julian Krizan kept his undefeated season going with two wins at 170 pounds and won his first-ever regional title. Freshman Troy Duellman went 2-1 and finished second at 132 pounds to earn his first sectional appearance.

Sophomore Braeden Person came up one spot short of joining his teammates at Saturday’s St. Croix Falls sectional. He went 1-1 in the regional tournament and placed third at 138 pounds.

Saturday’s sectional meet starts at 10 a.m. with the top two finishers in each weight class advancing to the one-day Division 3 individual state tournament at Wausau East on Feb. 13. The top scoring team will qualify for the team state tournament, also at Wausau East, on Feb. 20.

Krizan is listed at 11-0 after earning his regional victories. He pinned Thor Sather of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm in 2:32 in Saturday’s semifinal round and then outscored Ladysmith’s Matthew Roach 7-2 to win the title.

Krizan’s path toward state on sectional Saturday starts with 10-3 junior Kyle Lipke of Boyceville. The winner will face either 12-2 senior Logan Rueth of Stratford or 9-3 junior Ashtyn Waite of Cameron in the semifinals. Rueth is fifth in this week’s Wisconsin Wrestling rankings for the weight class.

Duellman (9-3) pinned Bruce’s Harold Garcia in 2:51 in the 132-pound semifinals before losing a 4-3 heartbreaker to junior Justin Fowler of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/ Prairie Farm in the final. Duellman won a second-place wrestleback with Chequamegon’s Jackson Ernst by pin in 2:49.

Duellman has a tough draw to open sectional competition Saturday. He’ll face seventh-ranked Mason Will, a junior from St. Croix Falls who is 12-0 so far this season. Fowler gets eighth-ranked Tyler Schunck (7-2) of Shell Lake in his opener.

Person fell 10-4 to Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/ Prairie Farm’s Kyle Jarmusic (5-6) in his semifinal. He pinned Chequamegon freshman Zeke Franks in 1:27 in the third-place match. But, when Jarmusic was pinned in 5:46 by Ladysmith freshman Riley Anderson in the final, Person lost his chance at a wrestleback.

Person officially finished 4-6.

Ladysmith easily won the team championship in Saturday’s meet with 216 points. Chequamegon (132.5), Chetek-Weyerhaeuser/Prairie Farm (132), Bruce (67), Cornell-Gilman-Lake Holcombe (58) and Phillips (46) rounded out the field.
