Hornets lose their sting in the week’s match-ups

Cadott’s boys basketball program faced off against some tough West Cloverbelt Conference opponents over the week, with two away games and one at home.

Jan. 26 vs. Stanley-Boyd conference (L 71-39)

To start the week, the Hornets played host to Stanley-Boyd, in a conference match-up with the Orioles.

Cadott put up good points, but Stanley-Boyd topped the Hornets, 32-21, by halftime. The Hornets tried to kickstart their offense in the second half, but the Orioles couldn’t be contained.

The lead proved too great to overcome and the Hornets saw the game claimed by Stanley-Boyd, 71-39.

Sophomore Tegan Ritter led on the scoreboard, with 15 points, followed by senior Cole Sopiarz, who had 11, including three shots from beyond the arc. Senior Brad Irwin also made a three, finishing with 9 points.

Senior Andy Falkenberg and freshman Jordan Peters each added 2 points.

Jan. 28 vs. Osseo-Fairchild conference (L 62-32)

Cadott looked to bounce back from the loss to Stanley-Boyd two days before, as they made the trek to Osseo-Fairchild.

The game was close in the first half, with the Thunder only up by three on the Hornets at the break. Unfortunately, Cadott seemed to lose momentum, only scoring 11 points in the second half, to Osseo-Fairchild’s 38.

As a result, the match went the way of the Thunder, 62-32.

Sopiarz knocked down a couple long-range shots, for his 8 points, while Irwin also contributed 8 points. Falkenberg followed that with 7 points and Ritter added 4.

Junior Ethan West also notched a three-pointer and junior Ryan Sonnentag ended with 2 points.

Jan. 30 vs. Regis conference (L 80-42)

In a rare weekend game, the Hornets took on Regis in an away match-up, where the Ramblers gained an advantage in the first half.

Going into halftime, Cadott was down, 29-14, but the team shook off their offensive woes and recorded 28 points in the second half. On the defensive side, the Hornets couldn’t hold down the Ramblers, as Regis scored 51 points in the second half alone.

The deficit proved too much and Regis claimed an 80-42 victory.

Irwin finished the night with 13 points, followed by Ritter, with 10, and Sopiarz, with 8, including a three-point shot. Falkenberg ended with 4 points, while Blake Irwin added a three-pointer.

Sophomore Dylan Drehmel chipped in with 2 points and Sonnentag rounded things out with 1 point.

Cadott’s record now sits at 3-10 overall and 2-8 in conference action.
