Archers from Medford, Gilman on target in virtual Badger State shoot

The Gilman and Medford archery clubs opened their 2020-21 seasons virtually, competing in the Badger State Winter Games by shooting in their home facilities and then sending in the scores to be compared against other participants.

In team competition, Gilman’s Pirate Archery Club won the high school championship with 3,252 points. The Pirates outscored Marshfield (3,100) and Faith Christian Academy (2,643). Gilman scored 2,142 points in the elementary school division to take second behind Auburndale (2,509).

Medford scored 3,010 points in the middle school division to place second behind Stratford (3,121). Hortonville (2,915), Marshfield (2,792) and Thorp (2,541) rounded out the field.

Individually, Medford sophomore Landen Viergutz scored 288 out of a possible 300 points to earn the highest score out of all 282 participants, which included 152 boys. He tied Owen Frohmader, an eighth grader from St. Paul Lutheran of Grafton, but Viergutz won the tiebreaker with 20 10-point shots. Frohmader had 19.

Freshman Jenna Wickersheim was right there as well, scoring 287 points to place second out of 130 girls overall. She tied Auburndale’s Sydney Lobner, but Lobner won the tiebreaker with 21 10-point shots, three more than Wickersheim. Freshman Hailey Reilly was fifth among 50 high school girls with a 281.

Mattie Gebert, an eighth grader, ranked second out of 52 middle school girls (grades 6-8) and 15th overall among girls with a 266. Fifth grader Jake Ertl was second out of 50 elementary boys (grades 4-5) with his score of 257.

Gilman’s high school team title was led by Kylee Burton’s 286 and Tatum Weir’s 285. They ranked third and fourth among high school girls. Burton was the top-scoring senior and Weir was the topscoring sophomore. Dalton Wisocky shot a 282 to rank second behind Viergutz among high school boys. He was the top freshman. Sophomore Casey Grunseth ranked third among high school boys with his 280.

Alex Copenhaver shot a 279 to earn the top score among seventh grade boys and rank third overall in the middle school boys division. Mylie Stephens was fifth among middle school girls with a score of 259. Reece Weir shot a 242 to finish third in the elementary girls division, while Kennedy Buske was fourth at 240.
