Wolfpack gains experience before hosting Regionals

By Ginna Young

Wrestling one more time before playoffs, the Cornell-Lake Holcombe-Gilman Wolfpack hit the road Jan. 21, facing off against teams in a quad hosted by Luck-Frederic-Grantsburg.

“We had a good night overall,” said coach Greg Sonnentag.

The Wolfpack came away with a 26-18 win, as they wrestled against Unity. Freshman Troy Duellman (138 pounds) won his match, via pin, against Ashten Christensen, in 3:58. Sophomore Braeden Person (145) also got the win, over Gavin Holden, as well as junior Julian Krizan (182), over Donovan Johnson.

Going up against Luck, the Wolfpack saw Duellman fall in his match to Taeden Nichols, while Person was pinned by Lucas Djock in 5:34. Although Krizan received a win by forfeit, it wasn’t enough to stave off a 28-18 defeat.

“They are working hard and steadily improving,” said Sonnentag.

Matched up with Ladysmith, the Wolfpack got a feel for what they are in for Jan. 30.

“The boys had some critical matches against Ladysmith for seeding purposes, as we see them this weekend at our Regional,” said Sonnentag.

Duellman again notched a win, taking the victory over Ladysmith’s Derick Vollendorf, while Person pulled out a 1:10 pin over Zach Kostka. Krizan narrowly missed a win, as he was defeated by a 3:10 pin from Matthew Roach.

Ladysmith received a number of forfeits, which led to the Wolfpack dropping that match-up, 42-21. However, the future is where their concentration lies.

“Hoping for a solid Regional performance here in Cornell, this weekend,” said Sonnentag.
