Stratford wrestlers able to beat arch-rival Edgar


The postseason starts Saturday

Stratford’s varsity wrestling team downed Edgar/Athens, 60-24, in their match at the Chippewa Falls quad on Thursday.
Tiger grapplers earning wins against the Wildcats were Roman Schmidt with a forfeit at 106 pounds, Ashtyn Kuehn with a forfeit at 132, Logan Gliniecki pinning Corey Schilling in 57 seconds at 138, Gavin Drexler pinning Keghan Hartway in 26 seconds at 145, Elijah Lucio pinning Jesse Jisko in one minute, 56 seconds at 152, Jacob Heiden pinning Brady Lemmer at 160, Logan Rueth pinning Collin Gajewski at 170, Jackson Ormond pinning Kyler Ellenbecker in 2:43 and Cole Marten with a forfeit at 220.
Edgar/Athens wrestlers gaining wins were Brooks Kraus pinning Alex LeMoine in 10 seconds at 113 pounds, Braden Finck pinning Cecilia Defoe in 23 seconds at 120, Connor Lewandowski pinning Logan Gaulke in 1:17 at 126 and Waylon Wirkus pinning Patrick Greenberg in 4:44 at 285.
Stratford also beat Eau Claire Memorial, 59-15, and Chippewa Falls, 58-21.
Tiger grapplers earning wins against Eau Claire Memorial were Schmidt with a forfeit at 106 pounds, Defoe with a forfeit at 113, Kuehn with a forfeit at 132, Drexler with a pin at 138, Elijah Lucio with a 13-1 major decision at 152, Heiden with a pin at 160, Ormond with a pin at 182, Raife Smart with a pin at 195, Marten with a 13-8 decision at 220 and Greenberg with a pin at 285.
Stratford wrestlers gaining wins against Chippewa Falls were Gaulke with a pin at 126 pounds, Gliniecki with a pin at 138, Drexler with a pin at 145, Elijah Lucio with a pin at 152, Heiden with a pin at 160, Ormond with a pin at 182, Smart with a 15-6 major decision at 195 and Greenberg with a forfeit at 285.
Edgar/Athens lost to Chippewa Falls, 39-34. Edgar/Athens grapplers earning wins were Lewandowski with a pin at 126 pounds, Hartway with a pin at 145, Jisko with a pin at 152, Gajewski with a pin at 170 and Wirkus with a forfeit at 285. Sweno honored
Jared Sweno was recognized as Marathon’s lone senior on this year’s Auburndale/ Marathon co-op wrestling team during Senior Night on Thursday. Auburndale/Marathon beat Wausau East, 48-34, and Stevens Point, 52-21, during Thursday’s home quad in Auburndale.
Auburndale/ Marathon wrestlers earning wins against Wausau East were Hector Pintor with a pin at 170 pounds, Sloan Welch with a pin at 195, Brice Thiel with a pin at 220, Dylan Dodson with a forfeit at 106, Noah Altmann with a forfeit at 126, Derek Vesely with a forfeit at 132 and Jared Sweno with a forfeit at 138.
Auburndale/Marathon grapplers gaining wins against Stevens Point were Logan Werner with a forfeit at 285, Dodson with a 15-2 major decision at 106, Tommy Renard with a forfeit at 113, Mason Putnam with a pin at 120, Altmann with a forfeit at 126, Vesely with a forfeit at 132, Sweno with a forfeit at 138, Jacob Smith with a forfeit at 145 and Brett Thiel with a forfeit at 152.
Postseason set to begin
Wrestlers on the temporary Edgar/ Athens and Auburndale/Marathon coop teams competing during the regular season will now be with their own teams for the postseason which starts this Saturday, Jan. 30.
Wrestlers from the Athens, Cadott, Edgar, Marathon, Stratford and Thorp teams will compete at the Division 3 regional, with the first session beginning at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday at Edgar High School.
The top team and two top wrestlers in each weight class at the Edgar regional will advance to the Division 3 sectional at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, at St. Croix Falls High School.
Cadott is ranked fifth in this week’s Wisconsin Wrestling online Division 3 team poll, while Stratford is ranked only two spots behind in seventh.
The top three wrestlers in their weight class at the Feb. 6 sectional will advance to the state individual championships on Saturday, Feb. 13, at Wausau East High School. The top team at the St. Croix Falls sectional will advance to the state team championships on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Wausau West High School.
