Brewster scores 1,000 points in âCats win streak
By Casey Krautkramer
Edgar senior Kyle Brewster became the seventh boys basketball player in school history to obtain 1,000 career points last week.
More importantly for Brewster, his Edgar squad beat both Marathon and Stratford to remain tied with Auburndale for first place in the Marawood South Conference.
Brewster sank a long pullup two pointer midway through the second half in Edgarâs 60-51 home win against Marathon on Jan. 12. He joins former Edgar boys basketball players Larry Brown, Ryan Bargender, Caden and Corky Untiedt, Tim Knoeck and Justin Sinz in the 1,000 career points club.
Now Brewsterâs name will forever be etched in Edgar basketball history next to names of the schoolâs other boys and girls, on the wall next to the concession stand in the high school gym commons are, whoâve also achieved 1,000 career points.
âIt feels pretty good to score 1,000 career points, but more importantly, we got a big win against Marathon which is huge in the Marawood South Conference standings,â Brewster said. He is the son of Gary and Shelia Brewster of Edgar, and he has an older sister, Hannah.
Edgar head coach Dave Huss said Brewsterâs been an excellent high school player during the past four years.
âEvery day he shows up with a great attitude and work ethic, and heâs been a pillar for every team heâs played on the past four years,â Huss said. âHis commitment to playing both ends of the floor is what makes him an exceptional player. âHeâs been a joy to coach and itâs been fun to watch him grow as a player and person, from a personal standpoint. Iâm looking forward to seeing all he accomplishes as he moves onto the next phase of his life after high school.â
Brewster runs the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds and heâs receiving interest from college football programs to play running back or wide receiver, but he hasnât decided yet which sport heâll play in college because he also loves to play baseball. He has decided to study physical therapy at whichever college he decides to attend.
He needed 19 points against Marathon to reach 1,000 career points, and he scored 22 in the victory. Senior Austin Dahlke chipped in 17 points and senior Konnor Wolf had 11.
Huss said senior Drew Guden has an opportunity to also surpass 1,000 career points toward the end of this season. Drew would join his twin sister, Makenna, in achieving over 1,000 career points in school history.
Drew was on fire shooting the ball during Edgarâs 61-34 road win against Stratford on Friday. He scored a game high 25 points while also playing stellar defense with four steals. Wolf added 10 points and Brewster nine in the victory.
Edgar built a 34-19 halftime advantage. No Stratford player reached double- digit points and one of the teamâs top players, junior forward Camden Daul, was out of the lineup with an injury against Edgar. It doesnât take anything away from Edgarâs impressive conference wins against Marathon and Stratford last week.
âI thought the kids did a great job of competing at both ends of the floor, sharing the basketball and playing sound defense,â Huss said. âWe knew that competing against Marathon and Stratford would be a big challenge, but the kids rose to the occasion. We will continue to take the season one game at a time, knowing there is a lot of basketball yet to be played.â
Edgarâs boys basketball team is the only squad, among all high school boys and girlsâ teams in The Record-Review
coverage area, to be ranked in this weekâs wissports.net coaches poll. The Edgar boys are ranked seventh in Division 4.
The Wildcats won their fifth straight game, 59-47, against the Athens Bluejays in a road game on Tuesday. Edgar improves to 7-1 in the Marawood South Conference and 10-2 overall this season, while Athens falls to 5-3 in the Marawood North Conference and 11-3 overall. Edgar and Auburndale sit atop the South with one loss apiece.
Stratfordâs boys basketball team has won two straight games, 66-46 against Abbotsford on Monday and 79-45 against Colby on Tuesday. The Tigers now have a 7-4 record this season. Cody Miller and Jake Skroch led Stratford with 15 points each in the victory against Abbotsford.
