Abby/Colby wrestlers go 2-0 in Eau Claire

Wrestlers get ready for the D-2 regional

The Abbotsford/Colby wrestling co-op enjoyed their most successful outing of the 2020-21 season, picking up a pair of dual meet victories on Thursday over Arcadia and Eau Claire North.

The Abby/Colby matmen overcome several forfeits in their opening dual with Arcadia to pick up a victory.

The co-op ceded 24 points with forfeits in the 113, 120, 126 and 195 weight classes, but bounced back with several pins. Duke Heberle picked up six points for Abby/Colby with a pin over Walker Slaby in the 106 weight class, which was quickly joined by a Jose Rodriguez pin in the 132 weight class over Jose Monroy.

Frankie Rodriguez got six points when Arcadia forfeited the 138 weight class, and River Halopka stopped Cruz Patzner in the 152 pound division via pinfall.

Angel Maganda dropped a close 8-10 decision to Pedro Juan Esteban in the 160 weight class, but Talon Severson got more points for the co-op when he pinned Gery Lopez in the 170 weight class.

Brandon Vicente added six more points with a pin of Joeseph Nelson in the 182 division. Andrew Jeske has found his form in the season, stopping Lane Huebner in the 220 weight class via pin.

Luiz Nava Rojas competed in the heavyweight division, but was pinned by Zach Ziegweld.

The co-op earned their most lopsided win of the season when they toppled the host school by nearly 40 points.

There were double forfeits in the 113 and 120 weight classes, but River Halopa added six points to Abby/Colby’s cause when Eau Claire North forfeited the 152 weight class, as did Duke Heberle, who won by forfeit in the 106 pound division, and Frankie Rodriguez in the 138 weight class.

Abby/Colby forfeited the 126 and 220 weight classes, but dominated the proceedings. Angel Maganda won a 9-5 decision over Ethan Olson in the 160 weight class. Talon Severson picked up his second pin of the night with a victory over Camron Baum in the 170 weight class.

Brandon Vicente and Andrew Jeske also made it two for two when they won their matches via pinfall for 12 more points. Vicente defeated Davin Xiong in the 182 division, and Jeske stopped Jim Yang in the 195 weight class.

Luis Nava Rojas dropped his heavyweight match with Riley Mercer via pinfall, but Jose Rodriguez and Tanner Halopka won their matches. Rodriguez stopped Michael Halvorsen in the 132 weight class via pin, and Tanner earned his second pin of the night with a win over Cody Danen in the 145 weight class.

The co-op will begin to prep for the postseason, with the WIAA moving forward with individual and team state tournaments.

The co-op will travel to Eau Claire on Saturday, Jan. 30, for a D-2 regional that will be hosted by Regis/Altoona.
