Hornets sweep quad meet
With the season in full swing, the Cadott Hornets Wrestlers headed to Stratford Jan. 7, for a quad showdown against three very good teams.
During the night, the Hornets took on G.E.T.-Melrose-Mindoro, who was last year’s Division 2 State runner-up team, pulling off a 48-25 win.
Earning victories in that heat, were freshman Brayden Sonnentag (120 pounds), by 15-4 major decision; sophomore Nick Fasbender (132), by a 7-6 decision; junior Kaleb Sonnentag (138), by fall in 2:43; and sophomore Tristan Drier (145), with a 9-1 major decision.
Also claiming victory, were sophomore Cole Pfeiffer (152), by fall in 1:49; senior Nelson Wahl (160), with a fall in 1:35; sophomore Peter Weir (170), with a fall in 5:28; and sophomore Dawson Webster, by a 3:24 fall.
“The Hornets wrestled with a lot of grit last night,” said coach Josh Spaeth.
Cadott also defeated Stratford, who is currently ranked seventh in Division 3, by a 48-25 margin.
Winning against Stratford, was Lukas Simenson (106), by fall in 2:36, for his first ever victory.
“He has been working hard and achieving new goals each week,” said Spaeth.
Also bringing in wins, were junior Logan Harel (113), with a fall in 0:12; freshman Ashton Bremness (120), by forfeit; B. Sonnentag, in a 2:50 fall; and Fasbender, by fall in 2:43.
Drier also picked up the win, with a 5-4 decision over the state’s No. 4 ranked wrestler, Elijah Lucio, in a hard-fought match.
“This was one of the most exciting matches of the night,” said Spaeth.
Wahl continued his winning, with a 15-13 decision; while Webster won by fall in 1:56; and junior Gavin Tegels (220) earned a fall victory in 0:48.
Cadott also faced off against Auburndale-Marathon, coming away with the 51-30 win.
Simenson gained the victory by forfeit, while Harel earned a 3:48 fall, and B. Sonnentag claimed victory by fall in 3:33. K. Sonnentag won his match in 0:44; with Drier, Pfeiffer and Wahl each receiving forfeits.
Webster won by a 9-3 decision and Tegels got the win by fall in 2:43.
“Our wrestlers fought every second of their matches,” said Spaeth. “We cannot ask for anything more.”
The Hornets are now fifth in Division 3, while eight of the grapplers have been recognized in state rankings in their respective weight classes: B. Sonnentag (No. 1); Wahl (No. 2); Tegels (No 3); Harel (No. 4); Drier (6); Pfeiffer (No. 7); and K. Sonnentag and Webster (No 11).
“Our practices have been intense and the results are starting to show,” said Spaeth.
